It a book with a classic story line of childhood wonder at an exciting time of year. It also was the first full-color picture book to use a black character to break the color barrier in children’s literature. The book is intended for children ranging ages 4-8. This would be a great book to teach about weather!

If this, then this is the pattern of the book. “If you give a mouse of cookie then he is going to ask for a glass of milk” and so on and so on. This book is good for children 5-10. Children younger seem to lose interest in my experience. I think this book could be a good book to use when talking about predictions because of it's poetry writing style.

She experiences these things through her interests in gorillas. While the story line is specific, the theme of the novel and the familiar childhood feeling of longing to do or see something they are interested in, is very common.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

This was a great book that sheds light on the relationship between a child and her father. It uses real life characters and makes the familiar area around the farm seem wonderful. The intended age range is wide and includes children ranging from preschool to fifth grade. I think it is appropriate for this age range and a variety of activities can be done with this book to support the varying ages. For younger children this book may be best suited for a read aloud, and for older children, it may prompt a writing activity.

Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles

Each Little Bird That Sings is a book that may introduce children to death for the first time. Comfort, the main character, lives at a funeral home. She also enjoys writing obituaries in her free time. This is a book I would use with caution before reading to very young children.

I think this book would be appropriate for older elementary students around age 9-12. They might relate to Comfort and would be able to handle the difficult content better than younger children. I would let parents know before I read this book to their children also in case the children want to talk about the hard content with their parents.

At first she does not like her name and she gets made fun of because of her name, but eventually she comes to like her name.

I think this book would work well with children 3-9.

This is a great book to use when talking about peoples’ names at the beginning of the school year. It opens the door for why people are named whatever their name is and how many people have different and unique names, but they are all special.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Where the wild things are by Maurice Sendak is a great book full of colorful art and themes of real life problems and feelings that take place in an imaginary world. The book has less than 400 words but communicates heavily as the reader follows along with the illustrations. The age this book is intended for is ages 2 and up. I think this is a little young but even young children can appreciate the pictures and artwork that covers this book. I think that it would be more appropriate for older children as the content itself is focused more on the theme of children’s misbehaviors and the characters reflect the anger of the author.

Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg

This is a fun fantasy read about a brother and sister that play a board game that comes to life while their parents are out. This was a fun read and had an engaging storyline. This book is intended for children a little bit older, ranging from 9-12 years old. I think the story line is appropriate and the page lengths and characters are more advanced than other picture books that I have analyzed. Older children will better understand the story line, and will be able to follow along with Judy and Peter’s characters.

Flotsam by David Wiesner

This was a fun book to go through. There are no words and the pictures are used to tell the story. The book contains illustrations of underwater life, including cities and inventions. This book is intended for three-seven year old children. Appropriately so, it includes bright images and no words. Children are introduced to fantasy that is grounded in some realism. There are real underwater fish, sails above the water, and seahorses.

Dinosaurs in Disguise by Stephen Krensky and Lynn Munsinger

This book is about a child who pretends that dinosaurs still exist. He talks about the places that dinosaurs still are and the pictures show dinosaurs dressed up as if they are in disguise all over the world. I think this book is perfect for boys especially, but also girls ages 3-10 who are interested in dinosaurs. I think this book could be a fun book to read to teach about dinosaurs and talk about how they do not actually exist. It could be a good book to read during an inquiry project about dinosaurs. It lets children really use their imaginations and think about whether what the book is saying is true or not.

Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky

This picture book is a fun fantasy read that is a retelling of the classic Rapunzel story we’ve all heard. This work gives the story new roots in historical art. Many scenes mimic those created by masters of the Italian Renaissance. The pages are filled with gorgeous paintings that make them seem 3-dimensional. The book is intended for five to eight year olds. There is a lot of text on several pages in the book. A little more text than many would consider appropriate for this age. It does however, work for read alouds with children this age. Even beginning readers would have a very hard time getting through this book. However, the story line is familiar and many children may recognize this fairytale.
