I think that Uncle Jeff letting Katie be part of the big case was one of the most exciting parts of her life not just for that time, but in general. She made it clear that she was quite bored of her incredibly simple and peaceful life, but she didn't really ever wish for something as big as the kidnapping to happen to spice things up, so it was probably really overwhelming (in a good way, probably) for her. I have one big question that I have a good feeling won't really be answered in the way I want it to... why did Katie's father leave? She made it clear that she thinks about him a lot, but she hasn't written down any reasons for him leaving yet. Maybe she doesn't even know. One of my epiphanies was Katie writing the whole situation of the ransom and the finding of the baby's corpse down. I didn't know the information she gave before and I pieced all of the information that she gave and the info that I knew from beforehand together, giving myself satisfying closure on the whole case.

Maybe Katie's dad was a bad person who did something really bad?

Uncle Jeff is making a great decision on letting Katie be apart of the case. Katie is bored and needs more challenges, like her report cards said. She has probably done everything to do in the little small town that she is restricted to and there is nothing left. It really is boring doing the same things everyday. When I go to the Philippines, I love it, but all of my cousins say that they're bored and they would love to come to America. Katie needs to do something new and exciting where she can use her brain, and the case is exactly that.

My thoughts are that Katie, who is our narrator, is very interested in journalism and interesting things that are happening around her town of Flemmington. The case with Charles Lindbergh has been going on for a while now, when she finds out that their is a trial happening in her town, she is very excited. Also, as said in the beginning she only has mother, not a father. The book doesn't tell us why or how. I have a few questions...
1. How and why did Katie's dad die/leave?
2. How will Katie be related to the Charles Lindbergh case?
3. What actually happened to Charles Lindbergh Jr.?
4. Who were actual victims of this case?
A realization/AHA/epiphany that I had was that Katie's mom called her like her dad. She also said that Katie is "restless." I think that Katie does not want to stay in this small area, she wants to explore. Her dad might have left/died for the same reason.

I think that Katie is starting to realize the brutal reality of the case. She pointed out that she kind of misses knowing everyone she sees, not getting pushed around, not having to wait for a phone line, not having to worry about everything, things like that. I think that she's realizing how big the case is and how much it can change her life as she knew it. Currently, the main question I have is how Katie feels about all the details of the case she's receiving. Some of them are pretty brutal, so I just wonder how she's taking all of it. I also wonder what her personal views on the case are. Since I think that she's mainly only going to write about the actual case and the facts from this point in the book forward, I doubt that she's going to reveal how she personally thinks of everything. Because of that, I kind of created my own theory. I think that she thinks that she doesn't really have the time to think about her own feelings, since it's the first time her life has been so exciting. I think she thinks that she has to focus on the facts themselves and not what she thinks. A realization I had is the massive bias seemingly everyone in the book has for Charles Lindbergh. That seems to me like a relatively unfair court case if essentially everyone loves the man.

A summary of pages 40 - 46.

Bruno Richard Hauptmann is now in guilt for this case. We don't know what will happen to Bruno's wife and kids when they find out. (Bryant 40). The person in charge of finding the victim of the kidnapping of baby Lindbergh was in the hands of Colonel Schwarzkopf. He was the head of the New Jersey State Police. He had been under a lot of pressure because of this case. (Bryant 41) When Colonel met Bruno they had a conversation about the gold notes found in his garage. Bruno said that he got the money from his friend Isidor Fisch; who left for Germany and died because he felt sick (Bryant 42, 43). Baby Lindbergh was burned into ashes on the Atlantic Ocean. (Bryant 46)

My thoughts...

Katie thought that her town was boring and nothing interesting ever happened, but now because of this case there is much more crowds on the road, very loud, less space, longer lines, etc. She is confused which she likes better; her old town or her new one. I don't think that Bruno is guilty for this crime the way the conversation between him and the colonel went. It felt to me that he did not do anything bad and was telling the truth.

My questions...

1. Will anyone care about Bruno's Grave is he dies through the electric chair?

2. Does Katie want her town to be like it was before the case, or does she want it to be the same as it is when the trial was going to occur?

An epiphany I had is...

I could not believe that Baby Lindbergh was burned and his ashes were thrown onto the Atlantic Ocean. It just seems really harsh and mean to do that to the baby. I understand that he looked like he was decomposing when he was found but that does not mean you burn the baby down.

This may not happen to everyone but when it comes to babies I can’t handle it, they are so cute and I cannot imagine him being burned and his ashes being thrown into the Atlantic Ocean.

The main thought that kept popping up in my head as I read this part of the book was how Katie became so excluded from her classmates and teachers at her school, since she was skipping school to go to the trial and everything. When Katie looked through a school window and saw her classmates, I can only imagine how bummed out she must have - probably - felt. If I was in her position, even if I was having a blast at the trial and it was entirely occupying me, I would have still felt a bit somber if I saw a place that used to be entirely familiar to me. The big question I have is if Katie's views on Bruno Hauptmann and the case in general have changed. If she didn't take part in the trial, she would probably end up hearing some of the trial's details from others, but she certainly wouldn't get the bulk of the information. Considering the bulky information that's quickly speeding at her in the trial, I think her opinions probably changed, maybe even just a little bit. The big epiphany I had was how much of a major effect the trial had on the surrounding area. Mrs. Hoffmeyer had to hire an English worker and stay in the back of her own bakery just because of the unfair view of Germans that Hauptmann brought.

Though she did say that she was interested in becoming a journalist, this might be one of her best chances to show her talents. Having such a big trial in her town, she have an opportunity to learn more about journalism and be a part of the case. A few questions I have are...
1. What will happen at school when Katie is gone?
2. Will Katie be an actual part of the case?
3. Will Katie become a journalist?
The Epiphany I had was that Katie's mom was going out to watch a movie with Mr. Griffin.
Does her mom like him?
Will Katie be happy or mad at her mom if she found out her mom liked him after her dad?

I also think that katie is sad that the trail is almost over and mike is having problems at home but she just wants the best for him. I think she had that dream of her and Mr. Lindbergh because she was kind of stressed out and she was scared and maybe she thinks its scary for Mr.Lindbergh to be asked all these questions especially because his baby just died. I also think Bruno Richard Hauptmann did not hire a very good lawyer because he does not remember what he says to the judge half the time and he mumbles to himself . I also was not surprised that that he was pronounced guilty of 1st degree 🤬 and was going to go to the electric chair because using common sense skills he is the killer if Lindbergh's baby. I question i have is kind of off topic but i wonder what's going to happen to MIke? also another question is, Is katie's mom and Mr.Griffin going to get married? because i'm assuming that they are together

The big thought I had while reading this part is how the trial has a big impact on Katie's mom's job, as she has to tend to all the people that work for the jury when they go to the hotel. This type of thing has happened before in the book, but it really only hit me here, in this part. The big question I have is this:
What does Katie think about going back to school?
Considering she was absent from school for the entire time the trial went on, she obviously missed a good amount of work. I just wonder how she's taking the reality of going back to school. If I was her, I would be stressed out. I also wondered who Ma Barker and her family is, but I looked her up and got my answer. Finally, my epiphany. This might be the biggest epiphany I've had while reading this book. Katie always wants her mom to go on a vacation and get some rest. She always wants the best for her mom. But, when her mom starts to date Mr. Griffin and she really is happy, Katie realizes that she isn't quite so sure how she feels about it. I love how Katie phrased it here:
"I know I should be feeling like
I'm gaining a father,
but it feels more like
I'm losing my mother."
Those four lines made me realize that just because Katie is in an amazing circumstance, going to an incredibly important trial and all, she's still just as human as the rest of us, and she faces the same uncertainties that the rest of us do. Those four lines were incredibly important, in my opinion.

The big thought I had while reading this part is how there are multiple poems in a row that have nothing to do with the trial and are just about Katie's life, which I find refreshing. It's refreshing for the reader (at least I think so) to learn more about the people close to Katie & Katie herself, instead of just focusing on the trial 24/7. I feel like this inclusion of multiple poems being simply about Katie's life might be a statement on Katie's character development, as she might be trying to avoid the trial in general as it reaches its climax. She might also just be realizing she's much more comfortable writing about herself, as more and more things happen in her own life and everything. The major question I had was this:
How does Bruno feel about the verdict?
I feel like hearing his opinion on the verdict would be incredibly beneficial for the story, but oh well. My big epiphany kind of touches on my big question. I realized that I really want to read/watch/see something that explains Bruno Hauptmann's views on this entire trial. Now that I have the perspective of the crowd and jury, now I want the perspective of the convicted criminal himself.

Part-4
I think that Katie’s mom is trying to find more opportunities in her life, she is starting change by finding a new husband or even soul mate. Even though she should also respect Katie’s feelings, after all she is her daughter. I think that Hauptmann should get another chance in proving himself. He has a really bad lawyer and he never got enough time to get himself together. Though Hauptmann could still be guilty because all the clues matched up So it makes sense of why the court would accuse for him for the kidnapp. They have no proof of any other person or people that could have done it.

He also didn't except the $90,000. His wife Anna Hauptmann didn't remarry or change her last name because she believed that her husband didn't even know about this case. She also claimed that her husband was at home when the baby was kidnapped.
Katie's friend Mike is in Indiana and I think his life will better there then it was in Flemmington.
Some questions I have are...
1. It all happened in her little hometown of Flemington, where nothing much happens and things usually just stay the same. They get the most famous person in the country to come to their small town to be in the trial for the crime of the century, then you have all of these reporters for different newspapers coming. Every American has their eyes on Flemington for the trial. It's probably just hard for her to believe that they chose her town, with a population of about 2,700 at the time, to have the country's biggest event at the time.
