But it seems like the man doesn't love her back, and is just forced to be with her.

The songs seem to tell stories about either love, heartbreak, or just about something happy. The songs are different because they each have different topics, and different messages behind them that the listener can interpret. The earlier decades seem to focus on topics, and stories that just sprouted up in America's history, and as the decades get later they start to focus more on society issues / topics that are going on in today's society. I believe the central theme for all of these songs in general is coming of age.
