The portrait makes the viewer think that one of Thomas Jefferson descendents  makes it feel like his replacement and it is trying to show that there is not much of a difference, that these two people are related.

I felt that the first quote was important because he directly asks a question to start his speech that makes us wonder. What does he really have to do with American Independence? Which could be interpreted as the theme of the speech. And the second quote describes what the 4th of July makes him and other slaves feel. They don’t respect this country and never will until everyone has freedom.
