<title>1 My bio areaThe fire salamander is possibly the best-known salamander species in Europe. It is black with yellow spots or stripes to a varying degree; some specimens can be nearly completely black while on others the yellow is dominant.</title>

<title>Theme 3Treaths to biodiversity I visited the Botanic Garden in Meise Belgium. The Meise Botanic Garden is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for plant diversity research, conservation, and documentation. The mission is “Building a sustainable future through discovery, research, and conservation of plants”.With a living collection of 18,000 plant species, a herbarium with 4 million preserved specimens, and an extensive archive and botanical library, The institute is among the largest botanic gardens in the world.Their science centres on collection-based research of plant diversity, evolution, ecology, and conservation. The botanic garden studies a wide range of taxonomic groups, including plants, algae, fungi, and lichens from Europe, Central Africa, Antarctica, and other parts of the world.Botanic Garden Meise is dedicated to sharing its knowledge on plants and their environment with the research community, students, and the public.</title>

<title>Theme 3Overexploitation of plants: the &quot;Wenge&quot; wood of the Millettia laurentii Tropical rainforests are threatened by logging — for wood, but especially to clear ground for agriculture. Every year, an area almost three times the size of Belgium disappears. As a rough estimate, this amounts to 5 billion trees. This is an enormous problem as tropical rainforests are the lungs of our planet. Every year they remove 1.4 billion tonnes of CO2 from the air, which is more than all other forests in the world combined.Tropical rainforests are therefore crucial in combatting global warming.Millettia laurentii has some clever tricks to deal with damaging insects and fungi. The wood — also called Wenge — is so hard that it is pest-resistant. Moreover, it is poisonous. However, precisely because it is so hard, Wenge is ideal for making furniture, doors, window frames and even guitar necks. Millettia laurentii is consequently logged on a huge scale and is threatened with extinction.Millettia laurentii is a legume tree from Africa and native to the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The species is listed as &quot;endangered&quot; in the IUCN Red List, principally due to destruction of its habitat and over-exploitation for timber.[1] Wenge, a dark colored wood, is the product of Millettia laurentii. Other names sometimes used for wenge include African rosewood (ambiguous), faux ebony, dikela, mibotu, bokonge, and awong. The wood&#39;s distinctive color is standardized as a &quot;wenge&quot; color in many systems.</title>

<title>Theme 3 - Step 4 Result of my comparisonsI see that many other learners descripe their country with a map and information about the status of biodiversity in their country. Some are really proffesional. I didn’t really made the padle that way but I added some maps and more local information.I feel a little bit frustrated because I am not used to this “padle – thing”. So, I realise that many padles are good structured, but mine is different 😊Although the learners come from different areas in the world, I see that the problems are similar. So I see f.i. that in UK some species of bats are vulverable, in Belgium the situation of most of the bats is also very critical. I also remarks resemblance about plants, because I am a guide in the botanic garden in Meise, where we have plants of all over the world.F.i. So, I read in a padle of a learner of the Phillipines that the Alocasia sanderiana is in danger because of the beautiful leaves. I see that this plant figures at the red list as “critacely endangered”. This plant belongs tot he family of the araceae. In the botanic garden in Meise – Belgium we have some species of the amorphophallus titanus, a “vulnerable” plant (also at the red list). This plant is from Indonesia. So, we live far from each other but I still feel connected thanks tot the plants. Conclusion: It is an interesting way to learn from each other.:)</title>
