The text states, "Tom is dead. He was caught trying to climb over the wall and was shot 17 times"(Lee 323). This quote explains how far the people took it to kill Tom, and how they did it for their own pleasure. This was wrong because Tom never did anything wrong, and shouldn't have been treated this way. Tom is being compared to a mockingbird, because all he does is  sing and make beautiful music, yet people still hunt him down and accuse him for wrong doings because he is a black man.
