The world-famous Louisville Slugger baseball bat was created by John Andrew “Bud” Hillerich in Louisville in 1884.

Legend is Bud, an apprentice in his father’s woodworking shop, headed out one spring afternoon to take in a Louisville Eclipse game, the city’s major league team. After seeing Eclipse superstar Pete Browning break his bat that day, Bud invited Browning over to his father's shop where he offered to make him a new bat. With Browning at his side giving advice, Bud hand-crafted a new bat from a long slab of wood. Browning debuted the bat the very next day. He snapped his slump, collecting a trio of hits and setting in motion a chain of events whose effects are felt still today.

The Louisville Slugger Museum is home to the world’s biggest bat. While the name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, the celebrations are about a month long.

Parades are a huge part of the festivities. The first first Mardi Gras parade was held in New Orleans on Feb. 24, 1857 and there have been nearly 2,000 Mardi Gras parades since then.

Each parade has their own theme taken from history, children's stories, legends, geography, famous people, entertainment, mythology and literature. All the floats are decorated to fit the theme and every year the krewe picks a new theme.

It is a Mardi Gras tradition that the riders on the floats throw out festive items to the crowd. That can include beaded necklaces, toys, cups and doubloons (colorful aluminum coins stamped with the parade organization and theme) or other trinkets.

The team introduced the use of dynamite. 90% of the granite removed from Mount Rushmore was by dynamite.

It is filled with picturesque wonderland of bizarre, colorful spires and pinnacles, massive buttes and deep gorges. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses, camels and rhinos once roamed here.

Today the park is full of bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets.

If you are trying to get people to visit a National Park, why would you call it “Bad”?

The name is an homage to people that lived in the Badlands before it was a national park. For hundreds of years, the Lakota people have called this area mako sica, which literally translates to “bad lands.”

The land presented many challenges to those living and travel in the area. When it rains in the Badlands, the wet clay becomes slick and sticky, making it very difficult to cross. It is these same conditions that made it the beautiful park it is today.

Dedicated on May 22nd in 1936, Dinosaur Park was one of America’s first dinosaur attractions. The park opened with five growling-grinning giants: a Brontosaurus, Apatosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex, all life-size.

Not only do the dinosaur sculptures represent the creatures that inhabited western South Dakota, but they also reflect the way dinosaurs were viewed back in the 1930’s. The dinosaurs are all positioned with their tails dragging on the ground, which we have learned since then is incorrect.

The sculptures were made from concrete with iron-pipe frames, making them exceptionally sturdy.

The park now boasts 7 dinosaur sculptures with a Protoceratops and a Dimetrodon added in the 1950s. One of the rare displays that encourages kids to climb the dinos, Dinosaur Park is very popular with the under 12 set, who really don’t care if the Brontosaurus has the wrong head, if it’s smiling.

As the name suggests, the eruptions are rather predictable, with the standard interval being 94 minutes ± 10 minutes. The geyser averages an eruption of 130 feet (40 m), lasting 11/2–5 minutes, and expelling 3,700–8,400 gallons (14,000–31,800 L) of water.

Old Faithful may be more famous, but the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring is the most photographed thermal feature in Yellowstone. That's because of its crazy-bright colors and enormous size.

Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. At 370 feet in diameter it is bigger than a football field. A gridiron is 360 feet long and 160 feet wide. With a depth of 121 feet it can swallow up a 10-story building.

But why is it so colorful

Water at the center of the spring, which bubbles up from underground chambers, can reach temperatures around 189 degrees Fahrenheit which makes it too hot to sustain most life. Because there's very little living in the center of the pool, the water looks extremely clear, and has a beautiful, deep-blue color (thanks to the scattering of blue wavelengths—the same reason oceans and lakes appear blue to the naked eye).

The rainbow spectrum of colors around the spring ranging from red to green is all thanks to the heat-loving bacteria that call the spring home. As the water spreads out from the center and cools, it creates circles of varying temperatures—And each ring creates a very different environment inhabited by different types of bacteria. And it's the different types of bacteria that give the spring its prismatic colors.

However, market hunting and poaching had a devastating effect on the bison population; and by 1890, fewer than 1,000 remained.

Thanks to conservation efforts, bison were brought back from brink of extinction. In 1902, there were only 23 bison in Yellowstone and today there are close to 5,000.

Bison are the largest land-dwelling animal in North America. The Army Air Corps wanted candy cane red and white stripes. The signature International Orange hue was actually the color of the primer.

The popsicle came about completely by accident. In 1905, an 11-year-old boy living in the Bay Area was making a beverage by combining some powder and water in a cup. He left his drink outside overnight with the stirring stick still in it; the temperature dropped low enough that the mixture froze.

The young inventor, named Frank Epperson, patented his creation in 1923. The exact location of Epperson when he created the first popsicle is somewhere between Oakland and San Francisco.

History.com claims Oakland as its birthplace, while the Smithsonian and The New York Times believe it was in San Francisco.
