Joseph Bell was born on December second 1837 in Edinburgh to his parents Benjamin Bell and his wife, Cecilia Barbara Craigie. He sadly passed away on 4 October 1911 at age 73, in Milton Bridge, Midlothian, Scotland. He attended the Edinburgh Academy before studying medicine at the university of Edinburgh. He graduated with his MD in 1859 and became a house surgeon at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary under James Syme. Then he became a demonstrator in anatomy at the University of Edinburgh Medical School before becoming a lecturer in surgery and in clinical surgery. Also fun fact he was Queen Victoria's personal surgeon when she was in Edinburgh.

Many people now refer to him as a " pioneer of Forensic pathology" this was because he was one of the first scientist to claim that the key of Forensic science is close observation by putting a emphasis on it. He was one of the first people to bring Forensic science into crime investigations.

It was rumored and reported that Joseph Bell was involved in the solving of the Jack the Ripper case. He supposedly studied the evidence and did a lot of investigating work and found out who it was and sent it through a letter to the police.
