This task has helped me in thoroughly understand the use of English in the excerpt and also, the content of the excerpt. Therefore, it extends my knowledge of English. First, I did Task 2 using Excerpt 1, which is of low difficulty. However, I felt that I could improve by doing it more, and one of harder difficulty. Therefore, I decided to do Task 2 on Excerpt 13, which is of medium difficulty.

Task 2 is related to Task 1 as without Task 1, I may not even understand some words in the excerpt which may lead to me not being able to understand the passage as a whole.

This task as helped me understand the uses of a linguistic feature in the excerpt which is the language of looking back in time in Excerpt 13.Understanding the uses of the features allows me to be able to use them properly, and improve my writing.

In the excerpt, the writer used the language of looking back in time well. She managed to apply it to every paragraph, and used phrases and tenses that showed that she was looking back in time very obviously.

After learning the skill, I have applied this skill in my writing. For example, in paragraph 2 of my writing, I used phrases like "looked back and recalls", "was five", "became", "used " and "began ".

Task 14

This task helped me learn to analyse writings, and allowed me to apply the knowledge of learner strategies that I have acquired in English classes to analyse the excerpts.

In Excerpt 1, the biographer used the learner strategy of providing a golden detail. A golden detail is a detail / description / comparison rich in meaning that the reader often needs to infer. The biographer used the learner strategy well as he gives a list of things he did and group things that would give one inference together, so that it would be easier for the reader to infer.

In Excerpt 4A, the biographer provided multiple evidences to support one claim. This ensures that the claim is heavily supported. Also, the evidences given are all relevant to the claim, which is good.
I have applied this skill in my writing. In paragraph 6 of my writing, my claim was that " the schedule was tight ". I then, supported it with a description of Bernice's time table.

In Excerpt 15, the biographer evaluated the April night when he was eight. The biographer used it well as the evaluation is clearly given in the paragraph 1 as the before, and in paragraph 9 to 11 as the after.

Although this task is not from "Language Study", this task would help me in achieving my goal as it allows me to gain knowledge and skill on analysing a writing. This would also be helpful to improve on my ow biography writing.

I have been reading books and passages. However, I usually do not read them in detail. Therefore, I have limited vocabulary and knowledge on how to interpret books and passages.

By doing tasks from ‘Language Study’, I hope to start a habit of reading in detail, and acquiring knowledge on language by doing more in depth analysis.

This task helped me to learn how to use an artefact in a biographical work.

Although this task is not under "Language Study", it helps in achieving my goal. This task enables me to practice analysing how the biographer uses artefacts in a biographical work. Therefore, it helps me acquiring knowledge on analysing a biographical work.

This task is similar to Task 14 as they both require analysing.

Although I have learnt this skill, I found it difficult to apply it to my writing. This is because I could not find an artefact that I was able to link and mention the artefact consistently in the writing. Therefore, I decided not to use an artefact as it may result in the artefact seen as not related to my biographical work.
