One example of Darry’s motivation is when Ponyboy returns home very late and Darry hit Pony across the face, only because there was the risk of Pony being hurt. Pony had scared Darry so bad, it caused him to do this. Another example of Darry’s motivation is that when Pony is at the hospital now safe and untouched, Darry and Soda arrive at the hospital to see Pony. Darry then starts to cry because he wouldn’t know what he would do if Pony had been hurt. This is a second example of motivation for Darry. In the book Darry says, “‘Another hour and I would have had the police out after you. Where in the almighty universe were you?’ I shouted. Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (44). This shows that Darry cared so much that it made him worried, but he showed it in anger, causing him to hit Ponyboy.

One way it shows that is when Ponyboy is being jumped by the Socs and is in trouble, Darry gets the toughest boys in the gang to go get Ponyboy and scare off the Socs. Another way the book shows this when the Greasers and the Socs fight in the rumble and Darry takes on Paul first to get the rumble started. A way the book shows this with direct text is “But Darry was keeping an eye out for me; he caught that guy by the shoulder and half lifted him up before knocking him three feet with a sledge-hammer blow” (122). Darry has a couple weaknesses, but one of them is he is very self centered, and likes to be the center of attention. One way it shows this is Darry likes to fight so he can show off his muscles. Another way he is self centered is when it says that Two-Bits mother warned them about burglars. Darry was not worried because he had the muscles to keep anyone away. It states in the book, “‘How come you like fights, Darry?’ I asked, looking up at him as he stood behind me, leaning in the kitchen doorway. He gave me one of those looks that hide what he's thinking, but Soda piped up ‘He likes to show off his muscles’"(113). That means that he doesn’t want to brag, but still wants to show off his muscles.

In the story The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the character Darry is a protagonist. One way the book shows this is when Ponyboy gets jumped, and Darry and some of the others come to his rescue. Darry is helping get rid of the force working against Pony, Darry, and the other Greasers. Darry is also a Dynamic character because he changes overtime. An example of this is when Ponyboy and Darry get into a fight and Soda runs out and tells them they have to stop fighting, and then Darry decides to shape up and stop fighting with Pony. It shows in the book, “‘Okay,’ I said. And I meant it. Darry and I would probably still have misunderstandings--- we were too different not to--- but no more fights. We couldn't do anything to hurt Soda” (150). Lastly, Darry is a round character because the story portrays more than one of his personality traits. Darry has a big personality. This includes being the center of attention, bold, direct, sociable, risky, and a live in the moment kind of guy. Darry shows these things in many different ways, like during the rumble he is the starter from the Greaser side not only because he is strong but because he likes to have the attention. The book shows this by stating “Who was going to start it? Darry solved the problem. He stepped forward under the circle of light made by the street lamp” (120). Darry also has a couple of weaknesses, like being insensitive, unstructured, impulsive, defiant, doesn’t think ahead, and he acts before he thinks. One way he shows this is when he slaps Ponyboy he doesn’t think about the effects of the action he is performing. He doesn’t think about the toll it will have on Pony and what might happen after he does this. Lastly Darry is very popular and has a lot of friends. He is the life of the party, confident, makes friends easily, charming, tolerant, and easy going. A good way to show this would be when he was in High school he was the most popular boy in school, was on the football team, and was voted Boy Of The Year.
