This week I made a general outline for what I need to do for my research. I decided that I should first research what places have access to makeup, then decide what regions I was going to use, and then begin researching the definition of beauty in each culture. So far I have just researched which places have access to makeup. I found two of my sources which are the websites for the two main makeup stores, Sephora and Ulta. On these two websites I found all the places they deliver makeup to. This is how I figured out what places have access to makeup. Next I am going to take all the places that have access to makeup and research a little bit about their culture. Once I have researched the culture, I can divide the places into cultural regions. Another thing I considered was researching by brand, or researching which specific brands each place has access to. This week I also thought a little bit about my final product. I decided it would probably be a good idea if I documented everything I tried and not just what worked. For example, if one culture finds something beautiful and I try to recreate it and it doesn’t work, I should still document that so in the book I make I can also say what will not work.

This week I continued to plan out how I was going to go about dividing my regions. I had originally decided I should base all of the looks I created off of what products were available in each place. So when I was creating a look I didn’t want to create it using something that place didn’t have access to. Because I decided this I started researching different brands. I made a list of all the different brands and then narrowed it down based on what people were familiar with. Once I narrowed down the brands I starting researching each specific brand and what places have access to each brand and different types of products. After I started researching this I began to think a little more and started to consider maybe not doing it by brand. I realized that it would probably be very hard to make myself look like someone from a different place using only what they had access to. If I wanted the results from each look to be accurate then I probably shouldn’t limit myself to only what that place has access to. I will probably still research it so I can include that when I’m talking about each culture in my final product but I decided that I would at least start out not limiting myself while recreating the looks.

This week I researched cultural regions throughout the world and decided on what regions I would classify the world into for my research. After researching the different regions throughout the world, I decided that I would split the world into the following regions: North America, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, European Union, Middle East, Oceania, and the Caribbean. I also researched further and decided that if I needed to split the regions further so I could have more of them to research and experiment for I could split each of them into the following: Africa would be split into Eastern, Middle, Northern, Southern, and Western Africa; Asia would be split into Northern, Central, Southern, Eastern, and South Eastern Asia; and the rest would not be split further. I picked these regions based on similar culture between countries. If they did not have similar cultures, then it would be hard to pick just one definition of beauty to recreate to represent the entire region. As I began researching cultural beauty, I realized that there is not always one specific definition of beauty in each culture. I will need to take into account that there are many differing opinions. For now, I have decided that the best way to deal with this is to recreate whatever is most popular of the different definitions. If there ends up being cultures with two or three different “looks” that are most beautiful and popular, then I may end up recreating both and putting both in my final product.

One of the things I did this week was I began researching the culture of Asia. As I was researching I decided that I needed to further culturally divide Asia into three more regions for my research. The three cultural regions being East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, with the Middle East still one of the other regions. All of the countries in Asia very greatly in culture and pop culture so I felt I needed to further divide it since it was just so different. After researching some more and talking to other people, this was how I felt it was best to divide it.

Another thing I did was I found another source about beauty trends in Japan and countries near it. The website was specifically about outrageous trends that have recently occurred which at first didn’t seem very helpful to me. I didn’t think that random stuff people used would help my research but as I started reading the article, I learned more about the culture from the outrageous products. There were products such as a smile line face belt, a face slimmer, a smile trainer, and a nose straightener that meant that in this culture, it is beautiful to have a slim face and young facial structure and a perfect smile which is something I will use in my project. Trends such as the eyelid trainer and eye widening surgery showed me that in this culture, it is also beautiful to have big and beautiful eyes. There were many more outrageous trends but they all taught me something about the culture.

This week I was not able to do much because I was at home with a broken knee but I did work on my project a little. I did not find any new sources but as I was looking through pictures on Instagram, I noticed that big makeup profiles from different places all have very different styles. From this, I was able to learn some of the different beauty trends in different places throughout the world. I also noticed a few common trends with all of the different places. Almost every culture defines physical, facial beauty by a slim face and perfect features. Defined cheek bones, defined jaw lines, and big eyes are some of the things every culture used to define beauty. The most common definition of beauty is the western or American culture definition. Many other cultures have trends they use to try to align themselves with the western culture. For example, in Asia, many people will have plastic surgery done to make their eyes the same shape and size as people of the western culture. Another example is many people throughout every culture in the world will have plastic surgery done to eliminate even the slightest amounts of facial fat so their face is precise and defined. Every culture has their one specific definition of beauty for a woman that almost all women try to meet. Although this “perfect” image is similar in almost every culture, every culture has to try to meet it in a different way.

This week I found two more sources. One was about some African makeup trends or tips and the other was beauty expectations in America that other cultures find strange. The source about African makeup trends talks about techniques and styles that are most beautiful on an African woman. Some of the techniques include ways of picking face makeup that are not too light and that complement their skin tone. One thing that is recommended is leaning towards yellow based colors. This website also talks about the best colors for eye makeup and lip colors. For eyes, it says that shimmery or bright colors are most beautiful and look the best on their skin tone. For lips, it says to use colors like pink or burgundy to make them look the best.

The other source is about expectations in America that are weird in other cultures. One of the main things is that girls in America all strive to be super tan. A lot of other cultures find this weird and find being lighter better because it shows a sign of importance or wealth. Another weird thing is the want to have a thin body. In a lot of cultures, having a bigger body is also a sign of wealth and class. Women in other cultures also find it strange and unnecessary that women in America pay to have so many things done. American women always pay to have their hair and nails done and other cultures find this completely unnecessary. These are just some of the American beauty trends that are not considered normal by other cultures.

This week, as I was researching how different cultures defined beauty, I was very inspired. I noticed how even though everyone thinks different things are beautiful, they are all still beautiful in their own way. People are all different but they’re proud of who they are. Girls all throughout the world find different things beautiful but none of them are ashamed to express what they consider beautiful. Women everywhere are expressing themselves in the way they want to. The thing I have learned the most from this project is how different all the cultures are but yet how accepting they are of themselves. I’ve also learned and grown to appreciate that makeup is an art and that is a way of expressing yourself. People embrace who they are and then wear makeup to define the characteristics that are special and unique to them and that they love. So many people think makeup is a way for girls to hide themselves and pretend to be someone that they’re not but that’s not the case. People wear makeup because they love the self and they are expressing who they are and what they love. My project has inspired me a lot and I’m hoping I can do it justice with my final product. I decided I would have somewhat of an introduction for the book I make. In the intro is where I would talk about what I have learned about people expressing themselves and about the acceptance I have seen people have for them self.

This week I found another source. This one is about beauty trends in Europe. It talks about three hair trends that are popular in Europe today. The first one is an extreme side part in women’s hair. The women in Europe, especially models, find it very flattering to have a very extreme side part with wavy hair. The next hair trend is having faded out tips, or ombre tips. Women will die their hair bright or icy blonde and then fade the tips into a bright rainbow color, such as lavender, baby pink, baby blue, or turquoise. It creates a very pretty look that almost gives you mermaid vibes. The last hair trend is big bangs from hair extensions. It is not popular for women to grow bangs but the big bangs look is considered very beautiful. In order to achieve this look without growing out their hair, women have started using hair extensions to create the big bangs look. The next trend it talks about is fake gel nails. Gel nails usually require UV light to dry which is expensive to have done. Women in Europe who want this without the extra money, have begun using gel nail polish that creates the same effect without using the UV light. They have an easy way to produce a popular and beautiful nail look. The last trend is vibrant or dewy skin. Having glowing and perfect skin is strived for in many cultures but Europe is unique in the way they do this. A lot of cultures tend to layer makeup on to achieve the “perfect” look but in Europe, most women and girls are found wearing way less makeup so their skin is more natural and radiant. They use lots of moisturizer and don’t wear a lot of makeup to achieve the dewy and glowing look.

This week I started planning out what makeup looks I am going to do for each culture. The first one I worked on was Africa. After researching what colors look best and what colors are most common for African women, I planned out the look I would try to create. For the face makeup, I decided I would do a light, not heavy, base. I will use a dark rose colored blush and a copper colored bronzer. I will also use a gold toned highlighter because these are what look best on African women. I also decided that for the eye look, I will use a light purple transition color with a dark purple crease. I will finish that with a gold shimmery lid. I picked this because bright colors and complimentary colors look best on African women. I also decided that for the lips I would use a dark maroon or burgundy lip color so it doesn’t take away from the rest of the look. I also started planning the look for North America. I only planned the eyes for this one. I decided to do a rainbow eye look because North American culture is very bold when it comes to makeup and beauty. I would do one eye with red, orange, and yellow and the other eye with green, blue, and purple. I also started planning my book. I started writing the introduction and I made the table of contents. Each culture will have their own section where I will talk about the culture and talk about the makeup look I did. I will also include pictures of each culture in each section.

The first thing I did this week was I went looking for more sources about beauty and makeup trends in the regions around the world that I haven’t researched yet. I found a source for Latin American (this week I also decided to combine Central and South America into Latin America) and planned out my makeup look for Latin America. I am going to do a light and soft eye look just to give the eyes some dimension. I will pair it with bright red lipstick because it is popular for Latina women to have their lips pop.

The next thing I did was research European beauty. I found another source about the makeup women in Europe most commonly wear. I also picked what look I would do to represent European beauty. The base will be very minimal with no bronzer or contour. There will not be any blush either and I’ll use lots of moisturizer to make the base look very natural. I will use a very light colored highlighter to highlight high points on the face to make the face look very light. European women prefer to have very highlighted features, not defined. I decided for the eyes I would do a black, gray, and silver smoky eye because smoky eyes are very common in Europe. European like dramatic makeup so they go with a smoky eye but they don’t like to spend a lot of their time on makeup so their smoky eyes are very simple and almost lazy. For the lips I will do bright red lipstick because European women are said to not be afraid of rocking a bright and flashy lipstick.

The next thing I researched was Eastern Asia makeup. The main countries I included as part of East Asia are China, Korea, and Japan. I found another source which is about makeup and beauty in East Asia. For the makeup look I create for East Asia, I will start with a very light and colorless base. I will not use blush or bronzer because women in East Asia find a colorless makeup look to be the most beautiful. For the eyes, I will stick with the colorless look and not use any eyeshadow. However, I will create a black winged liner because women in East Asia use the wing to help create a more desirable eye shape.

The next thing I did was I started researching beauty in the Middle East and Southern Asia. I decided I would combine these two into one makeup look because they have very similar culture and their idea of beauty is almost identical. When it comes to makeup, their idea of beauty is bold and heavy makeup. For the face I decided to do a full coverage base, with concealer and cream contour. Then I will set everything and use intense bronzer, blush, and highlighter. For the eyes I will do a soft brown smoky eye with big and dramatic false lashes. For lips I will do a nude lipstick with a shiny gloss on top.

The next culture I researched was Southeast Asia. I found a source about makeup and beauty in Southeast Asia. For the makeup look I decided to do a light and shiny base with concealer and a little bronzer. For the eyes I will do a smudged out black winged liner. I will also do dark, long, and thick lashes because most women in Southeast Asia consider this to be the most beautiful when it comes to lashes. For the lips I will do a pinkish nude with a shiny gloss on top.

Since this blog is already super long, I will just briefly say that I finished researching and planning the makeup looks for the rest of the cultures. I also created and took pictures of 5 of the different looks for my book.
