By: Sandry Melissa Mercado Acuña

In a job interview

Mr. Jhon: Good morning, thank you for coming. Could you introduce yourself briefly?

Laura: Good morning. My name is Laura Gómez, I'm 28 years old, and I have a degree in Business Administration. I have three years of experience in accounting and administration.

Mr. Jhon: What motivated you to apply for this position?

Laura: I'm interested in further developing my professional skills in a company that values organization and efficiency. I believe my skills can contribute to your team.

Mr. Jhon: What would you say are your main strengths?

Laura: I'm very responsible, organized, and I work well under pressure. I also have good communication skills with my colleagues.

Mr. Jhon: Perfect. And what about a weakness you're working to improve?

Laura: Sometimes I find it hard to delegate tasks, but I've been learning to trust my team more.

Mr. Jhon: Very good, Laura. Finally, what salary expectations do you have?

Laura: I'd like a salary according to the market, around $1,200 per month, although I'm flexible depending on the job conditions.

Mr. Jhon: Thank you for your time, we'll be in touch with you.

Laura: Thank you for the opportunity.

medical consultation

Doctor: Good morning, how are you feeling today?

Sandry: Good morning, doctor. I've been feeling a headache and a bit dizzy for two days.

Doctor: I see. Have you had a fever or any other symptoms?

Sandry: Yes, a bit of fever last night and some nausea.

Doctor: Have you taken any medication?

Sandry: Just paracetamol, but it hasn't helped much.

Doctor: Do you have a history of migraines or high blood pressure?

Sandry: No, none of those.

doctor: Okay. I'll take your blood pressure and order some basic tests to rule out a viral infection or a blood pressure issue.

Sandry: Alright, doctor.

Doctor: In the meantime, rest well, stay hydrated, and avoid stress. When we get the results, we'll adjust the treatment if necessary.

Sandry: Perfect, thank you.

Text argumentative:

The language used in a job interview and a medical consultation shares some common characteristics, but it also presents notable differences depending on the context and purpose of the interaction. In both cases, the language remains within a formal or semi-formal register, as these are professional situations where respect, courtesy, and clarity in communication are essential.

In a job interview, the language is characterized by being persuasive and protocol-driven. The interviewer uses a serious and professional tone, asking clear and direct questions to assess the candidate's skills, experience, and attitudes. The candidate, in turn, employs careful language, using expressions that convey confidence, responsibility, and trustworthiness. Colloquialisms and filler words are avoided, and coherence and precision are prioritized to make a good impression. Additionally, polite formulas like "good morning" and "thank you for the opportunity" reinforce the formality of the situation.

In a medical consultation, the language is also formal but more empathetic and explanatory. The doctor uses a calm and understanding tone, seeking to build trust and convey reassurance to the patient. Open-ended questions ("How have you been feeling?", "What symptoms have you noticed?") and technical vocabulary adapted to the patient's level of understanding are used. The goal is to facilitate communication and achieve an accurate diagnosis. In this context, language serves an informative, emotional, and orienting function, reinforcing the relationship between the healthcare professional and the patient.
