As a result of this spill, the EPA proposed revisions technology-based guidelines. These set the first federal limits on the levels of toxic metals in wastewater discharges coming from steam electric power plants. This led to a large reduction in pollutants in waterways and air pollution.

This resulted in Congress passing the National Environmental Policy Act which required environmental impact studies to be taken before any actual action occurred. Hundreds of more laws protecting coastal areas and endangered species followed as people began to doubt the safety of the oil industry.

To make matters worse, a storm blew in moments after and the oil was even more widespread. As a result of all of this, the environment was seriously degraded and the Exxon company had to pay billions in compensation.

The explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig had resulted in the deaths of 11 people. 
When the leak was finally capped, around 3.19 million barrels of oil were leaked into the ocean. Although the long term effects of this spill, on wildlife and the environment, are not certain, recovery is still in progress and extensive research is underway.

For example, Aldo Leopold and John Muir were conservationist with the goal to keep earth’s natural environment intact; The Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, The National Wildlife Federation, and Greenpeace are all examples of organizations that strive to promote environmental conservation through passing laws/standards and conveying the public to take the same approach; Exxon Valdez, Kingston fossil plant spill, the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, and the 2010 BP oil spill are examples of anthropogenic environmental disasters that had negatively far reaching effects, thus inciting the need to be more cautious toward earth's ecosystems.]]> 2017-05-16 17:32:16 UTC https://padlet.com/neel_panging_588/3qqdkzzmvwrt/wish/172157039
