Asia is the largest continent in the world and home to some of the
oldest civilizations known. The depth and breadth of the history in Asia is immense. In
order to even begin to scratch the surface it would take up the remainder of this textbook.
So instead, we will take a high-level (30,000 foot) view.

Asia has been the center of many wars that have defined nations, such as the Opium Wars, Sino-Japanese War, Korean War, and Vietnam War. The impact of these wars and other events in Asia’s history continue to be felt throughout the globe. In addition to man-made disasters, Asia lies in an area with active tectonic plates, and experiences many natural disasters that have shaped the landscape and history of the region. Not only does Asia experience earthquakes, volcanos, and tsunamis, it also is prone to monsoon
loods, typhoons, sandstorms, and extreme droughts. These natural events have had a tremendous impact on Asia’s history. For example, the annual monsoons are credited with assisting in the takedown of the Chinese Tang, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties. The same monsoons did not occur in 1899, causing a famine in India, which ultimately led to India’s independence.

Asian history would not be complete without mentioning the inventions from Asia that have changed the world. Many of the basic necessities you use today were invented in Asia, like a piece of paper or toilet paper. The origins of soap can be traced back to Asia, and China is responsible for giving the world ink and paper money. More recently, the
technology innovations from Asian countries are impressive feats. China has invented the first qualified robot doctor, the world’s largest floating solar power plant, and the world’s first passenger drone. Japan is responsible for inventing DVDs, the digital camera, and electronic calculators.

Asia is also home to one of the great wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China. The 13,000-mile-long wall located in Northern China was constructed by the Ming
dynasty to protect China from invaders. The Great Wall is one of the most impressive
architectural structures in history and attracts thousands of tourists each year.
