頤和園早在清朝乾隆二十九年的時候就以清漪園的名字建立，作爲慈禧太后六十大壽的大禮，耗費銀子四百八十多餘兩。但是因爲施政和民居的地方少，大部分地方都是給觀景和賞山湖色，因此乾隆沒有住過這裏。道光年時開始因國弱而荒廢。咸豐十年在英法聯軍戰役一火燒毀，香消玉殞。光緒十年開始重建頤和園，耗時十一年，并成爲離宮。一九五三年，對外開放。
