The Town purchased this land in the late 1800s as a source of drinking water. However, since the Wachusett Reservoir was built, Clinton no longer needs the Wekepeke Reservoirs as a water supply. The Town tried to sell the property to Nestle Waters in 2008, but the plan backfired when Clinton residents butted heads over the concept of "selling" its rights to an aquifer.
