We had been noticing our 6th grade students operating with a fixed mindset and wanted to change their mindset to a growth mindset. When we made our first cast, we were waiting for a bite. We got our first nibble when we went to the inservice and were given the Growth Mindset Survey from Corey. We were instantly hooked! After meeting with Corey and Jennifer, we decided we wanted to use the Growth Mindset Survey. Corey was instrumental in setting up the survey so we could administer it to our students.

We all hopped into the same boat and started our collaborative research. We searched for and found information on growth mindset by Carol Dweck. We watched videos and looked through other research books from Central Rivers AEA. Our instructional coaches also shared additional resources with us. Once we gathered all of our research materials, we were ready to set sail!

It was time to walk the plank. Our goal was to implement a growth mindset activity each month. Our first activity was previewing the growth mindset theory while playing Chutes and Ladders. We watched a Train Ugly video, simulated what is happening in our brain when neurons are connecting-showing the more exposure, the stronger connection, and revised mindset statements to growth mindset statements. Prior to conferences we had students set Growth Mindset Goals and students shared these goals with families at conferences. Partners researched accidental inventions and shared a written summary of their findings. Students worked individually and collaboratively to make a growth mindset poster. And for our finale, students had to abort the ship with our Escape Room Activity.

As a crew, we sailed right along administering the growth mindset survey once again to our students to oversee how their mindset changed from the beginning of the year until now. As you can see from this example, students responses from the statement, "I like doing things that I'll learn from even if I make a lot of errors," drifted from the left of the graph to the right, and anchored. After examining the rest of the questions we noticed our mates' mindsets did in fact set sail! Hopefully they made it to shore and took their treasures with them to seventh grade and will use these skills to the bitter end!
