Hijackers from a group called al-Queda took over 4 planes the morning of September 11th. Two of these planes were crashed into the World Trade Centers, one into the pentagon, and the fourth was a failed attempt that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. This sent the United States and Iran into a war with each other. The War on Terror began because of this event. It affected every person in this country in some way. For some, it affected them to the point of their own death or the death of a loved one. It affected New York as a city because they lost so much money from the destruction. It is still relevant today because, since then, airport security and security of almost all public events have not been the same.

In November of 2008 Barak Obama beat John McCain in the election by 129 electoral votes. This made him the first African American president in our country. He wanted to help the country recover from the great recession in 2008/2009. He also wanted to reform healthcare. Although it wasn’t immediately effective, over time healthcare has become more affordable to citizens. The First Lady, Michelle Obama, pushed for healthier lunchroom options for public schools. In 2009 Barak Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for treaties he made with other countries. He was re-elected and served his second term 2014-2017. This was important to people because it proved that America did not prioritize wealth, family connections, or background.

In late August of 2005, In New Orleans and it’s surrounding areas, a category 5 hurricane struck. It goes down as the third strongest hurricane ever. This city was expectant of hurricanes and had levees suitable for up to a category 3 hurricane. Some people blame the amount of destruction on engineering flaws.  The destruction and devastation of this disaster cost millions of dollars and killed many people. Those were only some of the ways this event affected people. The primary cause of the storm was the aftermath of a previous tropical storm and its interaction with a tropical wave.

As a student at Harvard University, Mark Zuckerberg invented an app that was originally created fora study he was doing. It was taken down only a couple days later. In early February of 2004, he came out with the same app with some modifications to match the app we know today as Facebook. This was designed as a social media app that allowed what he thought would connect Harvard students. Little did he know, overnight this app would have over 1,000 people registered. This has shaped social media in our society is probably the biggest way. This was the first major social media platform of this kind: based on pictures, likes, and comments. It led to Instagram and Snapchat and will be a part of our world for a long, long time.

The Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 was a huge event, especially for Utah citizens. It was a global thing being that it included competing teams from almost every country. Some of the events in the Olympics that year were in Park City instead of Salt Lake. Utah was chosen as the location that year based on votes and a bid. Unlike other possible Olympic locations, Utah was the most prepared, at least for that year.

Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, released the very first iPhone on January 9, 2007. It didn’t actually go on sale until June later that year. It was $4.99 for the 4 GB model and $5.99 for the 8 GB model with a two-year contract. Looking back, this is crazy to all iPhone users now. It’s crazy to think that the improvements made are worth so much money. He made a promising statement when he told the public about the software of this phone. People believed him and he sold 6.1 million phones in that first model, even though it was discontinued a year later. It has impacted society forever. Now it is almost unheard of for someone not to own a smartphone.

New Contracts from the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) said that writers were to get paid a set amount. The Writers Guild of America was set in place by these writers that did not think this was fair. They wanted to get paid a percentage, not a set rate. This strike cost the economy of LA an estimated 1.5 billion dollars. This was the longest strike since 1988. Although it was not the longest, it lost the most money. The writers were successful in their efforts to have their wages be based on a percentage. This was important because not all strikes are effective, but this one was. Researching this strike can help people know the importance of speaking out and standing up for what is right.

227,898 people died this day due to this natural disaster. The cause of this tsunami was an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. It sent waves as high as 30 feet 750 miles to the eastern coast of India, primarily hitting Sri Lanka. Everyone in this area and their families was hit with major financial and economical devastation. It is recorded as the most destructive tsunami in history. It is important to remember this because it caused so much damage and affected so many people.

Wildfire season in California in 2018 was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire season in California history up until that point. Later, in 2020 that record was broken. 1,975,086 acres were burned through the end of August. Not only was it destructive, but it was expensive. $400 billion was the net cost in damage and supplies. 24,226 structures were damaged or destroyed. This was another event that affected people financially and even more so physically. People were sick from the smoke, and 103 people died. It is important for us to remember this because firefighters gave their lives to help our country during this time.

In March of 2020 the world shut down due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus. Having said this, people were sick with Covid-19 or Covid-19 Symptoms months before that. This affected the whole world. Most people would agree that the biggest way it made an impact was quarantining and self-isolation. People had never had to live this way before in their lifetime. Government in the US, and leaders of other countries set in place mask mandates and mandatory social distancing. Another way it affected people was with an economic slowdown. Companies relied on online shopping and working at home.
