Education in Williamsburg differed greatly from today’s mostly because only boys went to real schools. Boys learned what we all do today in regular school. But what about girls? Girls learned cooking, sewing, and other “woman skills” at home. Most girls did not get educated. Another example is in diversity. African children rarely receive a full education. There was a huge lack of different cultures in schools. That is why education in Williamsburg differed greatly from today’s.

In that time and place, the college of William and Mary was a school for boys, and boys only. Unlike today, schools have different cultures and genders. Only a certain age: 12+, could attend the school. Although, today you can start school at age 5-6. In those days, at least one-hundred people attended. But in this time, many schools have over 400, if it is a small school it might have less, but the college of William and Mary was big. Like the 50s and 60s, there was segregation between boys and girls. While a boy was attending this ^^, girls went to Dame School, and did not have the same right as boys. The subjects were also not like today. Yes, they did study grammar, and other things like that. But when you get older, the only thing you could really become was a priest.

A few things that would happen in the Raleigh Tavern were singing, feasting, and having fun. The tavern was like an inn, but with more activities. You could rent a bedroom to stay in for the night. Next, there would be a tasty dinner. It usually consisted of peanut butter soup and shepard’s pie. After the dinner, people often drank wines and beers. They might sing songs. Then came the games. There were board games, cards, and dice. As you can see, the things that happened at Raleigh Tavern were very enjoyable for people in those times.

The social life in Williamsburg was usually in Releigh Tavern. This place was for colonial men to have social time with others after hard work. The starter for food was peanut soup. This was a dish most people liked and was popular. The main course was usually shepherds pie. Everyone liked this meal, and even I like it too. After this 2 course meal, the men occasionally sang songs, had balls, or fancy dances. They usually drank beer, or wine. The tavern was not only one room, there were other rooms too. That included game rooms. Men played cards, dice, or board games. Different people met at different tavern. Craftsmen at one, rich at the other. Releigh tavern opened in about 1717, the same year Westborough was founded.
