In architecture, it should always be kept in mind that the form always follows the function. It is extremely important to identify what the function of a specific building is in order to properly create the consecutive form that is needed. That is why structures like post and lintel, columns and entablature, and round and pointed arches were created by the Greeks and Romans as a solution to their problems in distributing the weight of the building. Some even use these structures to make these establishments taller and bigger with the consideration of its form and space. The way they construct these buildings does not only contribute to its exterior, but also in its interior which makes these buildings completely beautiful not only because of what it is looked like, but also because of how it was made.

Built in the year 1717, Catherine I of Russia ordered for this palace to be built which was designed by an architect named Johann-Riedrich Braunstein. In 1743, it was then asked by Empress Anna to be expanded and later on, requested by Empress Elizabeth to be renovated into a better version and was completed in 1756, and then changed again by Catherine the Great. It was said that it was being changed according to the style of that specific period. From the Baroque style that it was before, it was then changed into a Rococo style by an architect named Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Even with the several renovations that were made in the palace both interior and exterior, the Baroque style is still evident in the appearance of the palace greatly contributed to its overall exterior look and because of this, it became one of the most known museums in Russia up to date.

One noticeable structure in the exterior of the palace are the round window arches, as discussed in class, it helps with the distribution of the weight of the building, given that it is quite large. The round arched windows also contribute to the interior of the palace, given that there are a lot of windows, more sunlight enters the building which makes the interior more lively. Columns and entablatures can also be seen in the exterior of the palace which gives the building more support, indicating that it has a strong structure. There are also domes in both end sides of the palace which gives more detail and luxurious feeling. There are also paintings in the ceilings of the inside of the palace called The Triumph of Russia which probably represents the achievements of the Russians. Besides the structure, the color of the palace itself is the cherry on top for it gives off a royal and luxurious feeling. The overall style of architecture of the Catherine’s Palace is unique in its own way for the fact that it has been renovated several times and was changed according to what that period is famous for and because of this, it can be said that the Catherine Palace has beautiful architecture, indeed.
