The Polsby-Popper measure compares the area of a shape to the perimeter.
Our setting will be to work with squares and so the formula becomes
𝑃𝑃𝑀=(16 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 (𝑆))/𝑃^2
where 𝑃 is the perimeter of the shape 𝑆.
If the 𝑃𝑃𝑀 is close to 1, the boundaries are close to the constant curve (i.e. smooth like a circle), and as the measurement decreases, the more contorted the boundaries become.
The Reock Measure of a shape compares the area of the shape to the smallest circle that the shape can fit in and so determines how much a shape is spread out from its center.
When working with our square lattice the Reock Measure is
𝑅𝑀=(𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎(𝑆))/𝑑^2
where 𝑆 is our shape and 𝑑 is the maximum height and width of 𝑆.
If the 𝑅𝑀 close to 1, there is little dispersion, while the smaller the Reock measure, the more dispersion the shape exhibits.
