The Battle of Gettysburg was a major battle that held the balances of the Civil War. At one point the Confederates were really close on winning the Civil War overall. But the Union soldiers stood their ground in defensive positions and within 3 days the Union soldiers gave a major blow to the Confederate soldiers for the first time which really boosted the morale for the Union soldiers.

The casualties from this battle were severely high; one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. The two armies suffered between 46,000 and 51,000 deaths. Union casualties were 23,055 (3,155 killed, 14,531 wounded, 5,369 captured or missing). For the Confederate soldiers, they supposedly lost 23,231 (4,708 killed, 12,693 wounded, 5,830 captured or missing). Nearly at least one-third of Gen Robert E. Lee's officers were injured, killed, or captured.

General George Pickett

Another name that would carry great resonance into history was that of General George Pickett. When Robert E. Lee decided that outcome of Gettysburg was going to determine much of the war to come, he chose Pickett to lead a defining charge, this occurring on the third day of the battle, July 3, 1863. Pickett’s charge was put down severely by Meade’s superior force, and suddenly the war became winnable for the Union. Although the political reasons for the Civil War are complex, the two words “Pickett’s charge” go a long way toward explaining the southern defeat.

Now, the Union was created, because they wanted to abolish slavery itself. They saw it as unconstitutional and this was the side that was supported by the President himself.
