Sparta was a Greek city- state in ~ 650 B.C. The Spartans were known for their military prowess. All male children were expected to become a soldier.
Led by King Leonidas, 300 Spartan soldiers battled Persia, led by Xerxes. Out- numbered 50:1, all 300 Spartans fought to their deaths. Persia won the battle but lost the war. The Spartan sacrifice is considered one of history's great moments of valor. Sparta was destroyed in 396.

Greek family values are strong. Elements of tradition and culture transcend many generations. A young Greek in America may still honor the wishes of a great-great Greek grandparent whom he has never met. This is a stereotype and a generalization as some traditions are becoming diluted. However, core values remain the same generation after generation.

Greek families are very close and get together often to celebrate...everything! The gatherings are made up of extended family members and feature food and conversation. Greetings are warm; lots of hugs and possibly a kiss on each cheek.
