         <title>The Origin of Denim - Nîmes, France</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>The fabric denim, the material jeans are made from, originated in the French city of Nimes. </p></li><li><p>The name 'denim' comes from the French phrase "serge de Nimes" meaning "twill from Nimes".</p></li><li><p>This fabric was made by using a twill weave, with the weft (threads which run vertically) passing under the warp threads.</p></li><li><p>Then once threaded it is dyed with indigo, a natural dye extracted from plants.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Largest producer of denim is India, then USA and lastly China.</p></li></ul><ul><li><p>Machines such as looms, sewing, machines, washing machines, high-speed cutting machines.</p></li></ul><p>The Process: </p><ol><li><p>Cotton Preparation - To prepare cotton, after harvesting, its ginned to separate the fibres from the seeds and then undergoes cleaning, carding and combing to prepare it for spinning into yarn or ultimately, weaving or knitting into fabric.</p></li><li><p>Spinning - Drafting the fibres, adding twist, and winding the yarn onto the spindle wheel.</p></li><li><p>Warping - Secure one end of the yarn to the loom and wind it around the loom, maintaining constant tension, until the desired length is reached, ensuring all warp ends are attached to the back beam and of equal length.</p></li><li><p>Dyeing - Prepare your workspace, pre-wash the fabric, create a dye bath with hot water, add salt, then immerse the fabric, stirring regularly, before rinsing and washing separately.</p></li><li><p>Weaving - First, the cotton yarn is wound onto a loom, which holds the verticle threads, known as the warp. The weaver then interlaces horizontal threads, known as the weft, over and under the warp threads to create the fabric.</p></li><li><p>Finishing - A typical finishing process will consist of singeing, desizing, scouring, bleaching and dyeing. The fabric can also be dyed, or different fabric finishes can be applied.</p></li><li><p>Quality Check - To quality check cotton, access its feel (soft and sturdy), visually inspect for consistent even weave, and consider the fabrics density and thread count, with higher counts generally indicating better quality.</p></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Jeans were first used as men's work clothes (trousers)  for miners, cowboys, farmers and factory workers.</p></li><li><p>But now in the present, denim and jeans are a huge fashion franchise, billions of dollars are made each year because of how jeans have made such a huge comeback.</p></li><li><p>Eventually overtime not only men wore denim or jeans, but kids and women as well.</p></li><li><p>There are different styles, colours, shapes, sizes, patterns and continues to grow and expand even more, because of how many creative people there are in this world.</p></li><li><p>Blue jeans are considered a symbol of Western Colonisation and Capitalism. During the civil rights movements of the 1950's - 1960's denim was reclaimed by activists, and wearing blue jeans and overalls became symbolic for the fight of equality for African Americans.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Denim production significantly impacts the environment, primarily due to the water-intensive nature of cotton cultivation, the use of chemicals in dying and finishing and the releases of micro fibres during the wash.</p></li><li><p>Denim production can also lead to soil degradation, habitat loss, and the use of pesticides and fertilisers, which can have negative impacts on biodiversity and human health.</p></li><li><p>Because India is the largest denim and jean producers, it is therefore the most polluted out of all the regions they are produced.
