Winnie Wong, professor of rhetoric at UC Berkeley, spent six years in China's Dafen Oil Painting Village, researching its artists and its relationship to the global art market. At its height in the early 2000s, thousands of artists in Dafen produced replicas of artwork in mass quantities. These paintings were then exported mostly to Europe and the U.S., where they hung in hotels, restaurants and second-home condominiums. Read on about Wong's observations and how they inform the question: what counts as art?
