This video is a ted talk of a woman who has an autistic child and she explains common misconceptions about autism and facts about autistic children. For example, she explains that autism is a spectrum disorder and says that sometimes, autism can be mis diagnosed as ADHD. Also she discusses how autistic children generally like to have a "touch stone" person to be able to calm them down during a meltdown. Additionally, she depicts that autistic kids will generally fixate on things, be socially awkward, disregard structure such as rules in school. One thing i found very interesting and surprising was that the normal human speech is very fast. Approximately 35 words per second while autistic brain processes only about 1-2 words per second.

Some of this things include basic characteristic such as becoming more tolerant, patient and more understanding. Furthermore, Ian is very social for an autistic kid. He will often just walk up to people and hug them because he doesnt' have that personal bubble that other children were taught and we told it was considered rude.

This video discusses 5 funny, quirky, and cute things that young children with autism do. They include the following:
1. A steady hum that children often do when thinking, singing or even just using their imagination
2. Autistic kids also love putting shoes on the wrong feet!
3. The diet that they chose. This is because it includes, very odd combinations of food. For example in this video the child was eating chicken nuggets, oatmeal and soda.
4. Autistic kids also love making hiding spots in their houses and building forts.
5.A very unique imagination! This is because in the video, the child had a bandaid on his wrist and made up very elaborate and creative stories as to why he got his "owie".

This video gives a a brief description of autism and many initial symptoms that can be seen in children with this spectrum disorder. This video defines autism as a spectrum disorder which includes 5 complex brain based disorders that can affect a persons behaviour as well as social and communication skills. An Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) begins in a child before the age of 3 and lasts their whole life. One thing that I found particularly interesting, was that the video said that autism is four times more likely to affect boys than girls, and is found in all racial, ethnic, and social groups. There is no known single cause for autism, although the best available science points to important genetic components.

In this video, Lea, a mother of 2 year old Jack is diagnosed as being on the spectrum and she shares her attempts at dealing with this. She also states that according to professionals, between the ages of 2 and 4 is a critical age where they will be able to understand the most as an autistic child. Because of this, she put her son jack into many programs and therapies in order to assist him. Due to his autism, jack was unable to hit "normal" child milestones such as speech and walking until a much later time.

What is autism?

This video is full of facts defining what is autism. For example, the video opens with stating that 1 in 100 people have autism so it is a very common disorder meaning more that 700,000 in the UK alone. Autism affects how we make sense of the world around us. Asperger syndrome is a form of autism where the people with it generally have higher level thinking skills and are able to communicate with others around them but may still have difficulties understanding and processing language. Some issues people with autism have include sensory/ auditory issues, love for routine and habit, and having special interests. Some autistic people experience difficulties in understanding and relating to other people therefore having a social life. An example of this is trouble reading facial expressions and understanding sarcasm and jokes. Things that cause autism are still being investigated but researchers suggest that a combination of factors, both genetic and environmental may be responsible for changes in brain development.

For example, some include:
You don't look autistic, what's your special ability, everyone is a little autistic, autistic people don't feel empathy, and what is the best thing about being autistic.
I enjoyed this video a lot because everyone in the video was an autistic adult and therefore it gave real life examples and had real reactions based on things that are often said to them.

This video is a Public service announcement regarding autistic children and bullying. One fascinating fact mentioned in the video was that 63% of autistic children have been the targets of bullying. Sadly, highschool is very difficult for teenagers with this disorder because they lack a lot of social and communication skills and are unable to understand some peoples true intentions. Furthermore, some "bullies" will even try and target a meltdown for autistic kids by miss using the word autistic and creating triggering sounds. The video states that we can help and try to solve this problem by learning more about the disorder, be friendly to those who are autistic, and finally, if you see a person with autism being bullied- speak up!

Personal Reflection.

overall i found this project to be very insightful. I enjoyed watching the videos and learning new things about this spectrum disorder. Furthermore, i liked the freedom in picking this topic because it connected to my personal life. This can be explained because one of my best friends older brother, spencer, is on the spectrum, so often when i would be watching the videos i would be able to relate and say "oh I have see spencer do that before". Furthermore, one fact that i found particularly interesting from this project was the statistic that a normal human brain processes about 35 words per second while an autistic childs brain only processes about 1-2 words per second. Thats almost 3 whole sentences more! Additionally, i enjoyed picking a video regarding a Public Service Announcement about bullying because it made me happy to hear that people are making efforts to stand up for children with disabilities who are being bullied because its not like the children themselves can do anything to fix it. Finally, I really liked listening to the long ted talk about the mother with an autistic son. I enjoyed this video because it was very postitive and lighthearted as the mother found the best qualities of raising an autistic child. She was able to find the beauty in her kid and love him as any other. They even did normal things like go on vacation and to summer camp regardless of their abilities. In conclusion, I really liked this project because it gave me insight and another view to all abilities children.
