What Is Restorative Justice?

Definition - A system of criminal justice which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims and the community at large.

Do you agree with restorative justice as an approach to combating homophobia?
I agree with using restorative justice to approach homophobia, as by combating this in an non violent way sets the stage for others not to always take a hostile approach as that, won't solve anything. Such as if Gareth Thomas took the situation to court, the boy wouldn't have learned a lesson for his mistake, but possibly rather the opposite effect could occur, he may hold his hatred/ distaste and carry on being homophobic.

Who benefits from restorative justice, and how?
Both parties benefit from this type of justice because, the offender whom is only 16 wont have to go to jail, but instead do community service and can learn from his mistakes. This is beneficial as in some not so serious cases, instead of taking full on legal action which ends in court, doing restorative justice saves time and the prosecuted can learn from their mistakes.

Should athletes have to build a ‘resistance’ to discrimination?

In an ideal world athletes shouldn't have to build resistance to all sorts of discrimination- however, yes they should. Being in the spotlight or a public figure brings you into a new world in where you will be judged and discriminated upon. Not always but there will always be someone who has a grudge or something to say. An athlete must be resilient to this as any wrong move could 'fuel the fire' of sorts.

What can be done to protect athletes from homophobic abuse on social media?

To protect athletes from abuse online, their management team should monitor their pubic accounts for any harmful or abusive behavior online. Athletes should also block and report any hateful messages aimed towards them or their sexuality. Finally, athletes should use their message and public opinion to become more of a role model and to stand up to these messages and to show people that what they are doing is wrong.

Does social media have a responsibility to do more to prevent homophobic abuse?

All social media companies have a small percentage of the responsibility to blame. Although the abuse may occur on their website, there are millions of people using it every day and no company would be able to monitor everything. However they should investigate well known people whom are being abusive. In this case there isn't much they could do, however they could investigate more on reported accounts and possibly set up a blacklist where if someone says something abusive towards someone about their sexuality, they get monitored.

To protect their athletes from discrimination they could set a series of events in which if people are spotted and being reported for giving abuse to anyone, they are removed from the premises and not allowed to come back after a probation period, if however they continue, a lifelong ban should occur. This would set a healthy and safe environment for everyone.

The benefits of Thomas speaking of his attack allows others if they previously felt vulnerable or frightened to speak up, allowing them to speak up and say that this is wrong. This also allows people to look up to him and to what he stands for as a person and to be open and true to who he is and to not let anyone say otherwise, in this case attack him.

Definition - system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is reckoned through the male line.
Patriarchy can be easily explained by the following, a Wife is supposed to be staying at home, take care of children and do household chores. While the Husband is out , making money. When this isn't forced upon and is a choice this is not patriarchal, however if the society around you are making out like this has to happen. This is when you are following a patriarchal society.

What is feminism

Feminism is the a advocate of women's equality between both the male and female sexes.
An example of feminism would be the wage gap. It is well known that Men are favored more in some workplaces than Women. This is a example of inequality and to combat this, feminists are are trying to lessen the wage gap and to make it more neutral for both sexes. Because why should a man be paid more than a woman for the same job. This is the basis of this example.
