Reading to students has been shown to increase their knowledge and application of vocabulary far more effectively than recitation, definition, and drill. The teacher reading the text models correct pronunciation, phonetic awareness, and fluency. Playing with the text, emphasizing passages, and even using character accents adds to the experience.

Open-play manipulatives like movable letters construct phonemes, words, games, and messages used every day in the classroom. Everyday application is one of the effective ways vocabulary is built.

Building student vocabulary is a constructive process. Exposure to new words and meanings in ways relevant to a student's individual needs requires clear goals, planning, flexibility, and consistent application and practice. Words are written in stone; think of words as bricks. Each brick has its place and supports the structure of a strong vocabulary. From a firm foundation of encouragement and instruction, great works have been built, brick by brick.
