Without hard work and determination you won't be happy or get what you want out of life. 
2) This quote is showing that once you find something you love never give up on it and never stop working to get better at it. The amount of effort and determination you put into what you love is how much success you will get out of it.
3) In this quote Junior is stating that even though he feels uncomfortable leaving his reservation, he is willing to do whatever it takes to find hope and success even if it means leaving his home.
4) Junior's dad tells Junior this when he isn't sure if he wants to try out for the basketball team. He is saying that if you want something in life, no matter how big, you should work as hard as possible to secure a positive outcome. 
5) Even though Junior thinks he isn't good enough he doesn't just give up. Junior is determined to play and puts all his effort into try outs. However, persistence is also a key in determination in that "we continue forward no matter what internal and external struggles we face." One of the main ideas in this article is that "every action you take creates progress, and only quitting halts progression." This article relates to the theme of determination by showing that even though Junior has many internal and external challenges it will not stop him from what he wants out of life.
