These were movements in which people advocated for religious freedoms. Primarily, the 2nd Great Awakening was a “way to awaken the consciouces of people”. This allowed many people to start believing in certain religions, with an increase of Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and Seventh-Day Adventists.

It started in upstate New York, but spread to New England and the Midwest. During the Second Great Awakening, thousands of people gathered at large religious meetings called revivals. Charles was the “leader” because he (and a few of his evangelical leaders) promoted his social reforms like abolition of slavery and equal education for women and African Americans to a mass appeal. Also, he had a background in Presbyterian religions studies, and he was a preacher.
