The western regions features sections of the Carpathian Mountains, the Eastern Carpathians that stretches across Poland, Ukraine and Romania. The highest peak is Hoverla, which is 6,762 ft tall. Most of Ukraine consists of fertile plains and plateaus. The climate of Ukraine is temperate continental with the only exception being in the southern coast of Crimea which is the small island at the bottom, where the climate is subtropical of the Mediterranean type. Warm low-snow winters and rainy summers are specific to the mild climate of the Zakarpatye region.

The size of the Ukraine is 233,062 mi² which is about the same size of Texas being around 261,797mi². I chose the Ukraine for my project for two reasons, someone else chose my other country I wanted to do, and because it was one of the biggest country's in Europe, actually being the second biggest next to Russia. A famous person from my country would have to be Ilya Mechnikov who after studying starfish larvae, in 1882 he pointed to phagocytosis as one of the immune system's ways of operating. By this he meant that certain cells in the blood specifically white blood cells work by surrounding and destroying bacteria and other bad microorganisms. The name phagocytosis was actually helped be name by his friend Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Claus who suggested the name phagocyte as the name for a cell that can surround and kill pathogens. Ilya Mechnikov changed my life because he played a great role in advancing medical science which as some of my friends know I want to become a sort of chemist and although different he still helped advance medical science so he might helped me later on.

I found that Russia is trying to take over Ukraine starting in the Crimea peninsula the west side of Ukraine or it was before it was taken control by Russia. Basically starting on February 26 2014, armed Russian men gradually began to take over the peninsula, causing protests. Russia started to say that these uniformed militants, in Ukraine, were "local self defense forces". However, they later admitted that these were in fact Russian soldiers without insignias (basically people without badges or ranks).By February 27 , the Crimean parliament building had been seized by Russian forces. Russian flags were raised over these buildings, and a self-declared Russian government said that it would hold a referendum on independence from Ukraine. Following that internationally unrecognised referendum, which was held on 16 March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea on 18 March 2014 and to my knowledge has kept it even up until now.
