Plot is affected by the time of the setting because the fact that it is set at night adds to the dark, eerie theme of the story. Additionally, an important part of the story is when Bob lights his cigar and Jimmy figures out that he is a wanted man. In the story, there is a lot of description about light and darkness (this represents that Bob is 'bad' and Jimmy is 'good'). Plus, because it was dark at night, Bob did not really recognize Jimmy when he was talking to him. Also, the fact that this story takes place in the 1800's means that there are less modern references. In the 1800's, there were less lights on at night, which adds to the darkness of the street. Meanwhile, plot is affected by the physical setting because the fact that the story does not take place inside of a building, or the restaurant ('Big Joe' Brady's restaurant was torn down five years before the time the story takes place). If the story were inside a building, that building would be lit up. Additionally, the fact that Jimmy is able to walk down the avenue in New York (versus being inside somewhere) in his police uniform makes him look that much more like an officer, which is most likely why Bob did not recognize Jimmy.

The characters are affected by the time of the setting because it took place late at night and in the darkness. If this took place during the day with light everywhere, Bob, a wanted criminal would have been affected more drastically because everyone would be able to see him. He probably would have been arrested before meeting Jimmy. The darkness of the night also adds to the tone of the story. Also Jimmy asked someone to act as him after seeing Bob. Bob would have seen that wasn't Jimmy and when Jimmy first meets Bob as a police officer, they would have recognized each other right off the bat.
