Jones-town was the informal name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project formed by the Peoples Temple. A total of 909 Americans died that day in Jones-town in northwestern Guyana. On November 18, 1978 the cult leader Jim Jones put into motion the largest mass suicide in modern history. With the cyanide and sedative mixed with Kool-aid drink killed parents and children due to the command of the cult leader Jim Jones before he took his own life.

James Warren "Jim" Jones was a ordained as a Disciples of Christ pastor. He first started the Peoples Temple in the 1950's something unusual at the time for a mid-western church to have a mix of blacks and whites. After receiving lots of criticism in Indiana for his integrationist views, he moved his church to Redwood Valley California in 1965. After the church was doing well in California, he deiced to open other branches of his church in Los Angeles and in San Francisco and making that the headquarters in the mid 1970's. In 1977 that summer Jones and several hundred Temple members moved to Jones-town to escape building pressure from San Francisco media investigation detailing allegations of abuse, forcing them to give up their belongings, homes and even custody of their children.
Key individuals came into play when he moved to San Francisco that helped with increasing the potitical invovement by the Peoples Temple. With the help of the Peoples Temple that proved instrumental in the mayoral election victory of
George Mascone in 1975. George Mascone appointed Jones as the Chairman of San Francisco Housing Authority Commission. Jones also enjoyed public support even through he was considered a cult leader. Jones had contact with some very high level politicians in the United States like Governor Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Governor Mervyn Dymally and Assemblyman Willie Brown.

Leo Ryan a U.S. representive from California heard from some concerning family members that their family was being held against their will in Jonestown. Leo Ryan decided to go and investigate what was happening in Jonestown. Leo Ryan arrived in Guyana with photograpers, news reporters and concerned relatives of the members of the Peoples Temple. On November 17,1978 the congressman and reporters was welcomed with open arms to see Jones-town compound, they had dinner and a evening full of entertainment. To there surprise Jim Jones even agreed to an interview with the reporters. But during the visit some of the Peoples Temple members secretly asked Leo Ryan to help them escape from Jones-town. The following day as Leo Ryan and his group which had one of the Peoples Temple members tried to leave to go back to the airstrip. There was an ambush waiting for them in the jungle. Everybody was killed in the ambush at the airstrip. With that event set into act the large mass suicide orchestrated by Jim Jones.

The social factors that help Jim Jones gather followers was that he created a integrated family and congregation which was unheard of in Indiana at the time. Back in the 1950's with the racial barrier high Jim Jones disliked single race congregations. With his Civil Rights Activism he won over a lot of blacks which made up 68% of his congregation.

Jim Jones had a Autocratic leadership because he would force his followers to give there belonging to him. Also once they got to Jones-town they was unable to leave. Jones brainwashed his followers making it seem like Jones-town will be a utopia. Jones gave the order for everyone to drink the poisoned Kool-aid drink if they didn't they would be shot and killed.

The first Group-think symptoms is pressure on dissent, with this Jones used this to his advantage with religion like if you love the lord you will give me all of your possessions. The second one is illusion of unanimity because a lot of them wanted to leave Jones-town but didn't want to speak up because they felt like everybody else was happy there and the fear of being killed. The third one is self censorship because there was a lot of people against what Jones was doing like taking custody of there children and abusing the members but they felt like it was for the good of the group and that they was the only one so they kept quite.

How Group-think could have been prevented is by everybody coming together as one. If they felt like something was wrong they should have spoke up about what he was doing. Even through he was doing good in the community he was also doing bad that is what made him leave for Guyana but he brained washed his members into thinking everything was right.
