Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

There are symbols throughout the poem. A symbol that was implied throughout the poem was grass. The grass symbolizes the circle of life of how us humans get reincarnated into nature. There was a child was wondering what grass the writer says, "And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves." This is a perfect example of how grass has a deeper meaning than what it seems. It symbolizes people's deaths beneath all this grass. The author is trying to convey that life and death have such strong meaning to what yet has to come. The soil under the grass also represents how everything gets decomposed. Which leads into our next new life awaited for us. Grass can be explained through many reasons but it's apart of what we live in life and for our new lives.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is associated with life and death of a way there is always a new beginning or chapter for us. The writer begins to explain to the child about life and death and said, " They are alive and well somewhere, the smallest sprout shows there is really no death, and if ever there was it led forward life." This explains that is a new beginning to life that we should be aware of. The author wants us readers to know that death isn't also the worst scenario because there are always open doors for us into our next new lives. And our souls are still left from nature. Life and death is what leds to our new pathway of restarting our new live.

What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

"Or i guess the grass is itself a child, the produced babe of the vegetation." (518) The author is talking about where a person goes after they die, and he makes a prediction that the dust or dirt of that person allows grass to grow, that is why he is referring to grass as if it was a child. The poem's tone is serious, but is said in a playful and curious tone. It takes about death and rebirth, but states it in a way if which it is explaining it to a child. That is why the poem is called A child said what is the grass. Also, in my opinion, this poem is ironic because as the author is trying to explain what grass is ti a child, he gets very deep into the answer and doesn't have one singular answer to provide for the child.

What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The poet uses a lot of metaphor in this poem to emphasize the many things that grass could be. He compares grass to a uniform hieroglyphic, a child, a flag of disposition, a handkerchief of the Lord, and uncut hair. Walt Whitman also compares them to people, saying "They are alive and well somewhere, the smallest sprout shows there really is no death..." (519) This just shows that the tone of the poem is serious as it compares grass as many symbolic things such as a handkerchief of the lord and a flag of disposition, but due to the many ways and things he compares grass to, the tone of the poem can also be pictured as playful; as it is supposed to be said to a child.
