     I am at Fort Sumter and shots have been fired. The civil war has begun. For 34 hours the confederates were firing on us. The noise was deafening and created a thick smoke that made it hard for us to all breathe. We fired back just enough to let the southerners know that we were still fighting. There were only 82 of us soldier me being one of them and we had 40 workmen helping us out. Are commander ended up surrendering there was no way we could win we were greatly outnumbered. I have survived all of that and i am sending you this letter because i am not done fighting for my country. After my battle at Fort Sumter i don't know where we will go but i will go where i'm needed. I hope to see you all soon.
