Jamaica's first people were the Tainos. Peaceful people who were said to have come from South America. It was them who met Christopher Columbus. Spanish settlements flourished until the 1600s. In 1650s the Spanish lost Jamaica to the British who established large plantations. Eventually the plantations were shut down and slave trade was abolished in 1807. Heavy emphasis on accepting god, respect for nature and the value of human life.
