1. The fundamental tension the creators of Creative Commons were trying to resolve.

The primary issue Creative Commons was trying to resolve was the restrictions of copyright law and the unlimited technological possibilities of the internet. The hope was to essentially be more inclusive and allow more creativity and innovation.

Creative Commons (n.d.) Creative Commons certificate for educators, academic librarians, and GLAM. Creative Commons.
2. The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act

"This act extended US copyright terms for works by individual authors by twenty years". This act delayed works from entering public domain. Works were copyrighted until 50 years after the authors death, because of this act, it is now 70 years after the authors death. Then, the works become public domain.

An interesting component of the CTEA is that the "70 years after" does apply to anonymous works or works that are owned by a corporation.

It was named this because Sonny Bono was a member of the House of Representatives at the time and he supported this extension.

Authors Alliance (2017, November 7). The "Sonny Bono Memorial Collection" and US copyright terms. Authors Alliance.

Essentially, this case challenged whether the 1998 Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act was constitutional. The argument was that the act infringes on free speech. The court determine with a 7-2 decision that the act was constitutional and Eldred lost the case.

This case spurred the formation of Creative Commons: a set of licenses that embrace the digital and global possibilities while also providing attribution to the creator. Creative Commons works within standard copyright and there are still rules to follow, but it allows more innovation and creativity. Hence: Creative Commons!

Olson, T. (2013).

Creative Commons, to me, is an opportunity to share, create, and innovate in all forms of education and media. Today, specifically beginning in 2020, Creative Commons "embarked on a new strategy, focused on empowering governments, institutions, individuals, and communities around the world." This includes three key components: Advocacy, Innovation, and Capacity Building.

There are three ways to describe Creative Commons: an organization, a set of licenses, and a movement.

1. Creative Commons, the organization, is a non-profit organization that has the legal tools and power the open movement. It's most current strategy is to include those three components above: advocacy, innovation, and capacity building.

2. Creative Commons, the licenses, are a combination of attribution, share-alike, non-commercial, and no derivatives. There are six Creative Commons licenses.

3. The Creative Commons, the movement, is about advocacy, innovation, and capacity building. It is also growing to include GLAMs, which is very exciting! This includes converting currently non-digital cultural heritage resources to digital opportunities for the world to share.

Creative Commons (n.d.) Creative Commons certificate for educators, academic librarians, and GLAM. Creative Commons.
