The first strategy I used was context clues. "It had been a rash act to come here at all, and sheer folly to arrive together..," this made me think that the word "folly" likely means "foolish" for the reason that Winston had stated that it was a risky move to go to O'Brien's house at all. In addition, Winston and Julia had taken drastic measures to avoid being seen together on several occasions to avoid being caught, hence I believe that this particular words means "foolish." The second strategy I used was part of speech. The word "folly" is a noun because it is being used to identify an action of Winston and Julia.
Dictionary Definition: lack of good sense

This makes me think that folly means outrageous or just a dumb decision in general. Secondly, I used replace the word, and I replaced folly with amateurish, and it may not flow as well as before, but it maintains the meaning of the sentence. So it could mean like an amateur mistake. 2. Dictionary Definition - lack of good sense; foolishness.

The line that contains the word is, "Then he pulled the speakwrite toward him and rapped out a message in the hybrid jargon of the Ministries". After this line, the passage that contains the crazy language of speakwrite was given to the readers. In order to understand what this word might mean, I will replace the word jargon with a word that I believe might be a synonym. "...rapped out a message in the hybrid [words] of the Ministry". 2. The definition of the word jargon is, "special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand".

In this sentence I see the words conscious and pretentious. These words help me understand the definition of feeble by giving me a hint that feeble has something to do with the mind. The next strategy I used was to replace the word with a different word. I plugged in the word misery to see if it might make sense. The word almost makes sense, and I think the word feeble has something to do with how the mind reacts. The definition of this word is:lacking physical strength, especially as a result of age or illness.

The first strategy I used was part of speech to determine that disseminate was a verb because it was the thing that was happening to the disease. The next strategy I used was context clues. The sentence containing the word is talking about all of the things that they are prepared to do to weaken the Party, which gives the word a negative connotation. I also know that the sentence fragment mentions prostitution and then mentions "venereal diseases" (172). This leads me to believe that disseminate might mean to spread.

Dictionary Definition: spread or disperse (something, especially information) widely

The first thing I did in order to figure out what this word might mean was through context clues. "He went on, conscious that what he was saying must sound both feeble and pretentious:". In this line, we can understand that the author is trying to describe the way he is speaking. The second thing I did in order to figure out what this word might mean was through my background knowledge of the word feeble. I know the word feeble means to be weak in some way and because the author is saying that he must sound weak and something else indicates that the word pretentious might mean the opposite. 2. The word pretentious means, "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed".

"All the blood and lymph has been drained out of him by an enormous debauch of work, leaving only a frail structure of nerves, bones, and skin". In this line, the reader understands how tired or worn out Winston is feeling. And because we know that the word debauch is describing how much work he might have, we can replace the word with something that we might think it might mean. For some reason the word gyroscope reminds me of a compass. For instance, its root “gyro” means rotating spit, and “scope” means see. So this is why it reminds me of a compass, an instrument containing a magnetized pointer that shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it. Acknowledging this, and using context clues such as “equilibrium” and “pushed one way or the other”. It helped me enforce my first thought that the word has to relate or similar to a compass.

Dictionary Definition= a device consisting of a wheel or disk mounted so that it can spin rapidly about an axis that is itself free to alter in direction.
