In ancient Rome in 625 BC-476 AD women would wear long lounging dresses and men wore togas with bright colors to signify how wealthy they were to afford lots of bright color while the poor wore neutral making the clothes themselves by hand. The first sewing machine was made by Thomas Saint in 1790 and was first patented in 1846 which became really popular because of how quick and many clothes you could make with the sewing machines. H&M first appeared on October 4, 1947, in Västerås, Sweden later in the year 2000 they opened their first store in the US and Spain. Zara first appeared in 1990 and is now one of the most popular fast fashion chains we have today.

The average wage (per month) for workers in bangladesh is 37$ but for china the average pay is 200$. A garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed and killed more than 400 people and injured many others. The worker conditions for the people who make your jeans are terrible because, “The organization conducted a survey of 540 garment workers in Bangladesh, India and Cambodia — which found 5% of workers reported being hit on the job and 40% of workers in Bangladesh had seen a fire in their workplace.” Companies want to make cheap clothing but because China is raising its prices for workers the companies want Bangladesh to do the work for a cheap price. Since most clothes in the US are made in places abroad, very few people in the US want to man a sewing machine and so both the expertise and the factories have moved with the clothing industry.

“The fashion industry emits 1.7 billion tons of CO2 per year worldwide.” In comparison an elephant weighs 7 tons! Because of fast fashion so much CO2 gets into our atmosphere. Along with all the waste the industry makes,“15% of every production run ends up in the trash.” Also all the water it pollutes, “The fashion industry is estimated to contribute up to 20% of industrial water pollution in addition to millions of pounds of fabric waste.” The fast fashion industry affects the environment drastically.

Solutions to the Problem

Europe is starting to crack down on this fast fashion to make it more sustainable. That brings hope that at least some people are trying to save us from the pit of fast fashion. A company, Zady, made a T-shirt with this new idea of slow fashion which is sustainable, made entirely in the US and from cotton from the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. It is a little bit of an investment to buy it because it's a little expensive but soon it will blow up. A solution you can use in order to help slow down the waste of clothes, we can also take better care of your clothes so that they don’t end up in landfills, and buy clothes from companies you’ve researched. A problem that the idea of slow fashion and trying to stop fast fashion might face is that not many people know how bad fast fashion is so we need to educate people on the problems more and the solutions more. Take time to research and really learn about that company, the materials they use and their workers working and living conditions.
