In order for a magazine to be successful, it needs to satisfy the target audiences' needs. Audience members purchasing issues determines how well a magazine does in the industry and how well it can compete with existing magazines.

Throughout the development of my magazine, I have carried out research into my target audience to establish their general interests, hobbies and lifestyles. As the magazine I have produced is of the rock genre, the audience will be in the rock social grouping and will really enjoy the music already. Recently, rock music has become extremely popular in teenagers and young adults therefore I decided to aim my magazine at 16 - 24 year olds. This is effective because I fall into the same age range and like the same genre therefore I already have an individual understanding of what appeals to the audience. I also decided to include the sub-genre of indie because I think this is a unique addition that will help against competitors. Also, including a further sub-genre meant that I could try and appeal to an even bigger audience whilst still sticking to the same genre and style.

2) Stereotypes of Audience

My audience is portrayed in mainstream media by existing rock magazines such as KERRANG, NME and Rock Sound. As my audience is of the younger generation, they also use a lot of social media sites which have dedicated pages for Rock fan bases and followings. Looking into this, I created a mood-board of the stereotypical styles and stereotypical interests of my audience. Through this research I found their interests include buying tapes, records and CD'S, going to concerts and gigs and socializing in big groups. Their clothing is stereo-typically black including skinny jeans, converse, band tees, doctor martins, leather jackets and badges.
This information allowed me to establish the style I would need to interpret into my products and how I could represent my audience through my models clothing and interests.

Even though stereotypes of the audience are effective at giving a first impression of my magazines genre, it was important that I got genuine responses from my audience. I wanted to be able to portray my audience as successfully as possible therefore the more real information I know about them the better. To do this I created a questionnaire on surveymonkey.com and printed out copies to hand out to people in college. I also put online links to my survey on social media sites, sent direct messages to people and made my survey live on the website so other people could answer. This was effective is it meant I could get a wider idea of who my target audience would be for my product. I mainly used closed questions as I wanted more reliable and quantitative results however I did have "other options" which allowed for a more varied opinion. Closed questions also made the process a lot faster which is beneficial for 17- 24 year olds who have lower concentration levels and don't like wasting time reading.

I collected all my results from my survey together and created graphs to show a visual idea of what were the most common likes and dislikes of my audience. This was extremely beneficial as throughout my magazine I was able to keep in mind my audiences interests to make decisions based on what will interest them. My first results showed me their age, gender, favorite colors and opinions on magazines etc.

My first survey was very successful at giving me a basic idea of who would be my audience but it didn't really go into much personal detail. I therefore decided to make another survey that had more hobby related questions, giving me a deeper insight into the lifestyles and interests of my target audience. This was more successful as not only could I ensure my model represented my audience but I could also ensure my article and features represented who they would be as well. Asking what their favorite restaurant, media site, movie and music platform is may seem a bit random however it help to build an overall picture of who my audience would be.

6) Reader Profile

Using the results from both surveys I formed an overall judgement of who my target audience would be. I calculated the key stat of the most important questions and made decisions based on this. For example, 46.43% of my audience would be male and 53.57% would be female. Because these statistics are so close I decided that I would make my magazine unisex as I don't want to alienate any potential readers who enjoy the genre. I also used the stats to make decisions based on what is similar in the majority of the audience. For example, students would make up 85.7% of my audience. As this is a very big statistic I have decided to make my magazine appeal to students by distributing it in colleges and universities as well as including articles about student gigs and puns on the student life. By creating this reader profile, I have developed a greater understanding of my target audiences interests and I will use to my advantage to make my magazine more appealing. I think it has been an effective way to see who my target audience would be as I will now be able to include more personal features. For example, I have included a "Win Leeds festival tickets" puff in my magazine because I know that 61.9% of my audience will be unemployed so may not be able to afford to go to the festival even though they probably really want to because 85.7% are festival goers.

I also created individual audience profiles to find out who my target audience would be. I made profiles on both girls and boys so that I could find out the interests of both and try and get a mix between the two in my magazine. I made sure that they all liked the rock genre and all were in the same age range as my survey proved most popular (16-24 year olds). Creating an audience profile has gave me a more in depth idea of who my audience would be and allows me to include personal hobbies and interests. In my audience profiles I also asked an open question which was "What appeals to you in a music magazine." I think this is effective as not only will I know who my target audience is but I will also know directly from them what they will find appealing and in my specific media product.

SO WHO WOULD BE MY AUDIENCE?

After getting a lot of insight from a range of resources, I know who my target audience is and how I can appeal to them. I have used the more detailed concepts of each stage throughout my magazine to include their likes and dislikes and encourage them to purchase the magazine. I have briefly listed below the main points about my target audience as an overall view however the more personal likes and interests I have included in my main products. An example of this would be how one of my audience profiles said they like twitter so on my front cover I have an article about an artist getting into a fight on twitter.

Overview of Audience:

My ultimate audience would consist of both male and female indie/rock lovers. They will be students who are either unemployed or have a part time job therefore are limited to how much they can spend on the magazine. They will enjoy going to festivals and concerts. They use a lot of social media sites such as Instagram and snap chat which they can connect to the magazine on. They wear clothing from Topshop, H&M and Primark as these shops have rock ranges and offer quite vintage and unique styles especially black clothing. H&M is well known for its grunge style. The audience eats out at mainstream places like Nandos as food doesn't effect their representation too much. With such a limited budget they like to feel they are getting their moneys worth so appreciate added bonus features such as posters.
