As a future teacher it is my responsibility to educate myself and students, hold myself accountable, address sensitive topics, let every student have a voice, and treat each student equally with respect and dignity.
I should constantly be learning alongside my students because I will not be able to become a better teacher for my students if I am stagnant. There will always be things that I can learn and room for growth. To be a life long learner I have to have an open mind and hold myself accountable. I have to help myself before I can help my students, this is why I think it is so important to never stop learning. It is also very important to discuss sensitive topics such as racism, sexism, ableism, etc. in my classroom. It is very important due to the fact that our world is so diverse. We have to treat others with respect and dignity even if they are different that us. It seems like a lot of people don't do this so it is so important to start teaching children about these real sensitive issues as soon as you can. As a teacher I also have to be open for discussions and let every students know they have a voice and are allowed to voice their opinions. In school, we do not only learn by the textbook and powerpoints but by real life experiences. It is important for students to discuss social issues of the world with one another to be able to get different perspectives. Lastly, as a teacher it is extremely important to treat all my students equally with respect and dignity. It is never ok to treat a student less based on their demographics. As a future teacher it is my goal to treat every student fairly and if I feel like I have a slip up I have to hold myself accountable.

Every day we learn something new whether we know it or not. As humans we will never stop learning. As teachers I believe it is very important to teach our students the importance of knowledge and learning. If we want our students to succeed we have to help them learn how to love learning. Learning can come in many different forms. We also all learn differently and that is perfectly ok. We should embrace the different learning styles and incorporate them all into our classrooms. If we want to give our students equal opportunities I believe that we must include their learning type. I don't think it's fair to teach the whole class a subject in one way such as verbally explaining the information. This may help some students but not all students. To me this would be considered unequal. Instead, we should incorporate several types of learning such as spatial, kinesthetic, linguistic, etc. Besides types of learning, we have to get to know our students on a deeper level to be able to help and teach them in the most productive ways. We need to be aware of their cultural backgrounds, interests, native languages, etc. These points are very important to know because they play a huge role into who the students are and how they should be taught. Chapter 6 in American Education discusses student diversity. The chapter explains different cultures in America such as Mexican Americans, Native Americans, etc. Just as the chapter talks about segregation of other cultures in U.S. schools it also discusses how their cultures and native languages are taken away from them in schools. I believe this is countering everything we are supposed to be doing as teachers. We are supposed to be learning at all times as well as our students. Instead of taking away our students cultures we should be learning about their cultures and incorporating them into our classroom.

Teaching can be completed in many different forms such as lectures, personal experiences, books, media, etc. Teaching is also defined as the profession of educators. Teaching should not be bias as discussed in Chapter 7 of American Education. We should teach our students in the way that best suits them as an individual.

Students get more engaged in school when they are learning or discussing something they like or can relate to. I know this from experience. To be honest I have never really enjoyed reading. I thought it was really boring and took too long. At a young age I did not realize that it was not that I did not like to read but it was that I was not enjoying the books I was reading. Once I starting reading books that I actually found interest in then I no longer felt that I hated reading. This also goes for lessons in the classroom. My freshman year of college I was taking prerequisites for dental hygiene and I was taking Organic Chemistry. It was absolutely the hardest course I have ever taken in my life! I was struggling, finding it extremely hard to pay attention and to top if off I have never enjoyed or done well in science so this course was really tough for me. After my freshman year taking this course, I started taking the prerequisites for Elementary Eduction which has been something I have been interested in for as long as I can remember. When I started taking these classes I started doing much better and payed more attention in class. This was all because I was doing something I actually enjoyed. The learning environment also improved which helped me learn better. Students also learn better when their teachers are incorporating their cultures into the classroom and presenting culturally relevant material. This is because the students then have something they are able to connect to which enhances their learning. All students want to feel included, accepted and loved. As future educators we have to be able to give inclusion, acceptance and love to our students because if our students do not feel these things from us then they will not be able to learn in the classroom. Students learn best when they feel like the teacher truly cares about them and wants to help them succeed. When teachers are able to create that bond with their students it is then when the students are able to learn in the best circumstances. As future educators we also must provide our students with a safe area and be a safe person for them to come to. By doing this, we are creating that special bond with our students and encouraging them to open up then leading them to have the best place to learn.

Students learn the best when they are interested or able to relate or connect to the topic. This is true because students work harder and are more focused when they are doing something they enjoy. By incorporating our students lives and lifestyles into the lessons we are allowing them to learn in the best way that suits them. This also helps our students learn about who they are and give off that knowledge to the world around them. To be able to incorporate my students cultures and interests into the lessons I must get to know them for who they are first. By doing this, I will be able to show my students how much I care about them which can lead to them learning in the best way possible. My students will also learn the best when I take time to focus solely on them and show them that I care about them as a person and want to help and see them succeed. When a student feels like they can trust a teacher then they are able to have a better learning environment which is helpful for the students to learn in the best way. As a teacher I must create a safe, loving and positive atmosphere for my students to learn in.

This is going to be different for every single person. For me, my family are the people who are biologically related to me. I consider these people my family because they are the most important people in my life. I am extremely close to my parents, siblings, in-laws, nephews and niece which is why I say they are my family. It is also because I love, care and would do anything each and every single one of them and vise versa. I consider these people my family because of the trust we have with each other and the love we share. I know this is not the same for everyone due to situations with their biological families so I believe family can also be the people who you feel the closest to. The people who you love, trust and care about. Family can be the people you are biologically related to, friends, co-workers, teachers, etc. Family is whoever you feel you can be your complete self with. As for community I believe it is the people you surround yourself with and the groups you identify with. For me, some of my communities include being a daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, cousin, friend, Latina, Catholic and female. These are just some of the many communities I am apart of because these are groups that I can relate to because of similarities.

This also allows students to bounce ideas and share thoughts with one another. Sometimes it is more beneficial for students to work with others which is why collaboration is important in the classroom. Collaboration is also essential for teachers because they have to work with other teachers, administration, staff and students. It is important to gain collaboration skills as soon as you are able to because it is so vital in our society. We must learn how to collaborate with each other in a positive and effective way because we will be collaborating for the rest of our lives in many different ways.

Being a teacher means you must be an activist. A teachers job is not only the teaching the material that is required by state but getting to know who your students are, making connections with them and fighting for them. As teachers, we must set our students up for success. A couple of ways we can do this is by providing them with proper materials such as books and creating a good and safe environment for them. But, the biggest way is to advocate and fight for them. All of our students will have different lifestyles and will be going through different struggles. It is our job to learn about each lifestyle and struggle and do our best to help them overcome the difficulties in their lives. This means we, as teachers, must be activist for our students. We can be activists for our students by educating ourselves, setting goals, creating plans, using our resources and taking action. To be a teacher you must be passionate about what you do so we must take that passion into action and fight for our students rights for a fair and equal life.
