Incorporating learning about different cultures/heritages, especially during heritage months

My school curriculum, especially during our scheduled mentorship/SEL time, the curriculum does an overall good job being inclusive as possible. For example, during the month of December, there is a dedicated mentorship unit where scholars could write, draw and share traditions they do with their family. This was an open activity they built on throughout a given time period, and a lot of my scholars were excited to share what their families did. Although most scholars shared about what they did for Christmas and how their families celebrate that, there were still a diverse range of traditions that were still shared.

From the curriculum I taught last year, this was one of the only times where mentorship time was more inclusive. When it was Latinx Heritage month and AAPI month, the dedicated mentorship time was not reflective of celebrating other cultures, as much as what the curriculum reflect Black History month in February (which we spent all of February learning about through videos and read aloud books). I wanted to do my best on my own to reflect the other cultures reflected in my classroom and I wanted to learn with my scholars as well with the different traditions.

Because I was online, I was mainly solo and did not have collaborative process. For example with Latinx Heritage month, I tried my best to find as many read aloud books and videos that exposed my scholars about this community. And during the start of Lunar New Year, I was able to bring in what I have learned about Chinese New year through personal learning experiences from middle and high school, and college.

I want to be able to be even more inclusive and expose my scholars to different communities and cultures.
