Assistive technology is a category that spans the needs, conditions, and environments of a broad variety of individuals. Over the course of the last four decades, the presence of assistive technology has become common throughout American society and spaces both public and private. AT can be cheap or expensive, low-tech or high-tech, useful or necessary. Through the philosophy of Universal Design, many aspects of assistive technology have become regular parts of architecture, entertainment, education, and workplaces that are utilized and helpful to not only those individuals who may be limited without them but to all.
