While reading and reviewing the resources, a concept that jumped out of me that I looked closer at was the idea that burnout and compassion fatigue can be exclusive. In my mind, the two are so closely linked that you can't have one without the other, where as compassion fatigue can generally be more impactful than burnout, as opposed to a step along the road to burnout.

Self Care for Counselors

As someone who has worked in the mental health care field for the last few years, I feel I have a good understanding of the importance of health care for counselor and similar positions. Counselors tend to take on a lot of other's difficulties, traumas, and emotions. Our instinct is to, as a result of the nature of the field, help as many people as possible, and a natural way to do that is to take on the burdens of others. Self-care is important to counselors and similar professions because it can help alleviate the impact of those burdens on the professional.

I promote self-care a lot at work, as I work in the mental health care field. I can often be heard saying two things in regards to self care:

"Cookies are self-care." Sometimes it's okay to indulge in enjoyable things in order to feed your soul. I like to take a little time each day for enjoyable activities, like playing video games or reading comic books (currently working through the Invincible Series).

"Self-care can be things you don't want to do." One thing I hate doing is cooking as a chore. I love cooking socially and for others, like on Thanksgiving or Christmas, but struggle with cooking for myself daily. One self-care strategy I have been engaging in lately is cooking healthier meals each day, instead of relying on pre-prepared meals like pizzas or tv dinners.
