         <description><![CDATA[<div>Have you ever spent the whole night using <strong>effortful</strong> <strong>processing</strong> to try and cram as much information as you can right before a test then you realize you forgot the info only a day or two later? That would be your <strong>Short-term memory</strong> at work! Your short term memory is the part of your brain that hold bits of information in your memory for a brief period of time such as a few seconds to hours.&nbsp;<br><br>Today was my AP Statistics exam and I spent the entire morning trying to memorize as many equations before the test as I could. It came in handy since I was able to use some of the equations on the test! Since I already am forgetting some of the small details and equations, I know that this was my short-term memory at work. Knowing what information and how long that information gets stored in your short-term memory is very important as a student who is often asked to recite information.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Think of your favorite memory as a child or a favorite vacation you have taken. The memory is an example of <strong>long-term memory</strong> working! Long-term memory is relatively permanent and limitless.&nbsp;<br><br>When I try to think of memories that would be in my long term memory two images pop into my head:&nbsp;<br><br>1) Going to Disney for the first time with my family in 4th grade&nbsp;<br>2) Going in the ocean for the first time on a spring break trip to Florida in 7th grade&nbsp;<br><br>The ability to remember events long past is very important for shaping our behavior. If we did something wrong, we will remember what to avoid in the future and the opposite can also be true!&nbsp;<br><br>Furthermore, there are different types of long term memory! Both of the memories I mentioned are&nbsp;<strong>Explicit&nbsp;</strong>which means I have to consciously recall them. They can further be categorized as an&nbsp;<strong>Episodic </strong>memory since they are specific events I can remember.&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There’s a lot of working parts involved with memory. Starting simple are the 3 processes of memory: <br><br>1) <strong>Encoding</strong> - getting information into the memory system&nbsp;<br>2)&nbsp;<strong>Storage&nbsp;</strong>- retaining information in memory overtime&nbsp;<br>3)&nbsp;<strong>Retrieval&nbsp;</strong>- getting information out of memory&nbsp;<br><br>This may seem like a lot to&nbsp;<em>remember,&nbsp;</em>but a simple way to think of these processes is by thinking of the movie&nbsp;<em>Inside Out</em>&nbsp;and all the different parts of the mind that the memory orbs have to travel through!&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of my favorite methods for remembering information, especially in math class, is by using <strong>mnemonic devices</strong> (memory tricks) such as the peg-word system to help me remember processes. The&nbsp;<strong>Peg-word system&nbsp;</strong>is a memorization technique that associates words with already memorized words. However, more often I tend to not use that system and just use mnemonic devices.<br><br>Some example I use include:&nbsp;<br>PEMDAS - the order of operations&nbsp;<br>CSSO - what to include when describing a data plot&nbsp;<br>FACE - the notes between the lines on a music staff&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I love history classes, but one thing that can be difficult is removing sequencing of events, and sometimes knowing the order in which events happened is crucial to understanding history. Something I needed to remember in APUSH last year was the “road to the revolutionary war” and the order to events that caused it. To help us remember the order of these events my teacher used a trick called&nbsp;<strong>Method of Loci</strong> which is associating items with a location. She did this by using the door frame, the windows, and the rows of desks in between to each represent an event. For example, the door frame was the French and Indian war that caused the British to loose money. The next set of desks was then increased taxes, and so on until we reached the windows which was the first battle.&nbsp;<br><br>Being in the AP test and being able to picture the room and the events associated with each location was super helpful for me and my classmates.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A method, that is not to be confused with <strong>Chunking</strong> (organizing items into familiar units to “chunks” to better remember them), is called the <strong>Heuristic</strong> method of problem solving. This method involves using shortcuts that reduce the number of steps it takes to solve a problem. One could do this by:&nbsp;<br><br>-breaking a packet of 100 questions into 10 sets of 10&nbsp;<br>-working backwards&nbsp;<br><br>These are both strategies I like to use! When I am reading a chapter that is 20+ pages in AP Gov I like to break it into sections of 5 pages to make it more digestible. I also like to start tests at the end and work my way froward.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A common problem solving strategy or method is <strong>Algorithm</strong>. Algorithm is using a fixed set of rules or procedures that will guarantee a solution. Ways I use this method include using equations in math class to try and find the probability of a certain event occurring. Another outside of school example would be tying my shoe; I tie my shoe the same way every time and I am guaranteed that it will then stay tied.&nbsp;<br><br>I would say that this method, once learned, is very effective and useful in our everyday lives. It makes normal tasks much quicker and more efficient.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Problem solving strategies can be great! Problem solving obstacles on the other hand, not so great. <strong>Problem-solving obstacles</strong> are human tendencies that hinder our ability to problem solve. One type of obstacle is known as <strong>mental set. </strong>This is when one tends to only see solution that have worked in the past, and not possible alternative solutions. This can be a problem since it could hinder innovation or better ways to do things. Coal was originally a great source of energy to power our lives, if engineers didn’t break past mental set of only seeing coal as an energy source we wouldn’t have solar or nuclear energy!&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

This would be an example of <strong>functional fixedness</strong> which is the tendency to think of things only in terms of their useful functions. This often prevents creativity or thinking outside the box. A water bottle often is associated with holding water, however, it could also function as a rolling pin if in a pinch!&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In a 2022 article my Jessica Colarossi, Colarossi describes an experiment Donne by Dr. Steve Ramirez at Boston University &nbsp;about being able to turn down negative memories by stimulating happy ones instead. He found that positive and negative memory cells are stored in different regions of the <strong>hippocampus</strong> (area of the brain that retains memory). Him and his team used mice to creat good and bad memories and then triggered these memories with lasers. They found that, “artificial activation of a positive experience permanently rewrote a negative experience, dialing the emotional intensity of the bad memory down” (Colarossi). They also found neutral memories successful in altering those negative memories.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Forgetting</strong>- the inability to retrieve, recall, or recognize info that was stored in long-term memory. <br><br>To many forgetting may seem like a negative occurrence or a fault of the mind. Researchers from McGill University in Montreal claim otherwise. They believe that the ability to forget is what connects all living organisms and that treating forgetting as an afterthought is a disgrace. While running experiments on fruit flys, they found that <strong>dopamine</strong> (chemical neurotransmitter) is an essential part of forgetting since it regulates the expression of memory. They believe that the brain is always actively trying to forget information it has already learned, which would in part explain short-term memory. When preforming tests on rats and mammals they found that connection strength in memories is determined by the type of receptor at the <strong>synapse</strong> (end of a nerve cell where electret current is passed through) of a nerve cell. They also found that, in rats, when blocking the mechanism that would remove a memory they were able to stop the rat from forgetting a location of an object. Despite this, they still claim that forgetting is essential to life and that it is a detail that should not be <em>forgotten.&nbsp;</em><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think that often we take having a memory for granted. However, without it we would literally be able to do nothing. My ability to type this paragraph without looking at the keyboard is my <strong>procedural</strong> memory helping me automatically remember how to do things. Even forgetting can be beneficial like when your brain <strong>represses</strong>&nbsp;a painful injury so that you do not have to relive through the pain. Our memory also allowed us to problem solve and be able to move pat obstacles that maye prevents us from achieving our full potentials. I believe that our brain’s memory abilities are some of the most important functions it can preform&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Songs I can sing without looking at the lyrics&nbsp;<br><br>1) Story of My life- One Direction- me and my sister had a Midnight Memories CD we would play on our tinker bell CD player and this was one of our favorites to sing along to&nbsp;<br>2) That’s What Makes You Beautiful- One Direction- Same as before&nbsp;<br>3) Love Story -Taylor Swift- I feel like this song was everywhere in my childhood and it feels like one of those songs I’ve always just known. It a favorite to play in the car with friends or siblings&nbsp;<br>4) We Are Never Getting Back Together- Taylor Swift- same as before&nbsp;<br>5) Deja Vu (probably almost any song off that album)- Olivia Rodrigo- my sister and I have been fans of Olivia since HSMTMTS and when this song came out we would always blast it with the windows down while driving&nbsp;<br>6) Good 4 U -Olivia Rodrigo- same as before&nbsp;<br>7) Northern Attitude- Noah Kahan- my sister introduced me to him last summer and we would always listen to this song along with some of his others along with Hozier and the Lumineers and they all remind me of summers at my grandma’s lake house in Wisconsin.&nbsp;<br><br>I could probably list dozens more&nbsp;<br><br><br>This list has made me realize my while I have 3 younger siblings my sister closest in age to me seems to have a huge impact on my music taste.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
