I am going to study Spanish as one of my option subjects in Year 10 because I love the language for a start and it opens up ways to possibly taking part in an foreign exchange, which means you get to spend time with a Spanish family in Spain. My Spanish teacher is amazing and so helpful if I need extra support. Learning Spanish makes you bilingual which means you can speak two languages and having Spanish as a GCSE can also help with my further education which could even possibly mean teaching Spanish!

What I like most about Year 7 Spanish is, all the work we get is so much fun to do and as well as learning and expanding our knowledge, we get to do it in a variety of fun and different ways. The ways in which we learn in Spanish at CTK usually help us to remember our vocabulary for classwork or homework. I think the most fun part of Spanish is getting to write long paragraphs in another language. And if you make a mistake, don’t worry as the teachers guide you to fix your mistake in a way that you won’t forget again.

MFL curriculum vision

“Learning a foreign language fosters an outward looking approach to other cultures; pupils’ curiosity and deepens pupils’ understanding of the world”

Our curriculum enables all learners to become world citizens and competent linguists who are able to make connections with other aspects of their curriculum and to embark on higher education and/or a future career in languages.

As a result, our curriculum

• builds on the skills and knowledge at KS2.

• Enables all learners to respond to spoken and written language from a rich range of authentic sources, including literary texts

• Enables all learners to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating, including through discussion and asking questions and continually improving the accuracy of pronunciation and intonation

• Enables all learners to listen to and understand clearly articulated, standard speech at near normal speed

• To write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

• To take pride in successful linguistic achievement

• To develop awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where the language is spoken

• To develop language strategies, including repair strategies.

• To gain a solid foundation on which to prepare them for future language study.

• To understand how languages prepare them for the world of work.

The Key to success in learning Languages is vocabulary learning!

We use a lot of different resources in our KS3 and KS4 lessons to engage students with their language learning.

Here are two of our favourite learning websites that our students use inside and outside the classroom;

https://quizlet.com/en-gb (great for quizzes and practising all the vocabulary taught in lessons)

https://www.languagesonline.org.uk/ (self marking exercises that focus on vocabulary and all grammatical aspects of the language being studied)

On this website there are lots of 'live' lessons you can watch and videos that teach you about Spanish culture!

The free language learning app - Duolingo

If you have a smartphone or an iPad you can download Duolingo and start practising key Spanish and French vocabulary! It is packed full with activities and games for you to enjoy.

This website is a great way to practice your Spanish from KS3 all the way through to KS4.

You can choose from the options in the column on the left hand side of the page. All of the exercises are self marking so it's a great way to practice your language learning!

Spanish is really enjoyable at Christ the King because you get to explore the culture in so many different ways. From learning about different places in Spain that you can visit yourself to learning how to speak the amazing language of Spanish yourself, it's all around an amazing language to learn.

I enjoy Spanish because it is fun to learn about a language, its culture and how different it is to England and by learning Spanish, it gives me an alternate perspective on the world. A final reason why I enjoy Spanish is that it opens up a number of job opportunities, nationally and internationally.

I enjoy learning Spanish at CTK because its probably the most challenging subject to learn and therefore the most rewarding when you get it right. It also helps me during the times I go on holiday to Spain as I can understand road signs, food orders and much more.

Spanish trip to Ávila

For many years the department has organised a trip over to Ávila, Spain for our Year 10 students.

The trip combines language lessons mixed with various trips out to Segovia, Toledo and Madrid (with a visit to the football stadium included!) It's a great way to explore this amazing country.
