It is served as an apéritif before starting a meal, both as a matter of tradition and because the drink itself is strongly alcoholic.

A popular tradition is that “chacun prépare sa propre mort” (everyone prepares his own death). Instead of serving the mixed drink, the host will simply put out the ingredients, and everyone will prepare the drink according to his or her own taste.

Manner Schnitten is a typical and traditional Austrian cookie first produced in 1898 still in the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. Its tasty biscuit with hazelnut cream makes it a perfect snack for lunch break or even as a dessert. It harmonizes with grabing a coffee or chocolate - and best thing: no need to cook or do the laundry after it :)!

Even though I don't drink alcohol, I bring you a traditional Madeiran drink, a PONCHA.
It is a very well-known regional drink. Its existence dates back to the 19th century, as an adaptation of the drink known as "panche" brought from India by English travelers in the 18th century. Poncha da Madeira has some flexibility when it comes to the selection of its ingredients. They say that the history of poncha began with fishermen, in Câmara de Lobos, hence the name. As they had very strong brandy, they added water and added lemon peel crushed with sugar. It was made this way because the raw materials were the cheapest.

Pilsner UrquellThis legendary pale Pilsen lager has become a legend amongst beers, and has created a completely new category of beer (Pils, Pilsner). Neither the recipe nor the brewing process has changed since it was first made in 1842. The skill of the Pilsen brewers has meant that its quality and flavour have stayed the same, too. This is proven by regular laboratory comparisons, the oldest of which dates back to 1897.

Sauli: Finnish candy: Salmiakki and chocholate

Salmiakki is a licorice sweet flavored with ammonium chloride, i.e. salmiakki. The taste of salmiakki is both sweet and salty at the same time. Salmiakki is mainly eaten in the Nordic countries, Germany and the Netherlands. According to historians, the reason for this is the Netherlands' close trade relations with the Nordic countries hundreds of years ago. Nordic products and habits became established as part of the Dutch lifestyle. In the rest of the world, salmiakki sweets are not sold much. In the United States, salmiakki is known as a "Nordic specialty", and it is only sold there by specialty stores specializing in Nordic products. The salty taste of salmiakki sweets is caused by ammonium chloride, or salmiakki. Ammonium chloride is white in color, but it is dyed black with medical charcoal for appearance reasons.

When Finnish people are abroad for a longer time, usually they miss Sauna, Salmiakki and black ryebread.

Taste of Salmiakki can be a bit of a challenge and that is why I brought also some Finnish chocholate with me. But to make it a little bit of a challenge, I took also some chocholate with Salmiakki chips baked in it. 😁
