Padlet is a digital pinboard that allows the user to upload various files such as images, videos, music, documents, weblinks, etc, and the pinboard can be shared amongst various users in order for interaction and collaboration to occur. Students can complete projects while collaborating on Padlet, or teachers can project Padlet and have students add to it throughout as a way to complete a collaborative assignment during class. Users can easily copy and paste into the pinboard, and the Padlet boards are auto-saved so there is no fear of losing materials. Currently Padlet is offered in 29 languages, and allows users to work with an unlimited amount of collaborators. Users can also embed content directly from Youtube, Twitter, Vimeo, and 400 other apps. They are apps available on Apple, Android, and Kindle devices, and there are five options of privacy settings offered.

Padlet limits your storage space with the basic membership plan, and with only 3 padlets offered through this plan, you have the choice to either delete your work or run out of padlets. There are also Ads with the basic membership plan, which can be concerning as an educator when you are choosing to give your students access to something or choosing to display it in your classroom. This leaves the opportunity for inappropriate content to pop up while students are working, which can be troublesome depending on what type of blocking software the school uses on their devices at school or Internet. To this same point, if students are able to browse through the dashboard with their own account, there does not seem to be any filtering of content from the Padlet website, which could also leave for inappropriate content to be displayed by other Padlet users. Although there is a profanity filter, I am not sure how the website would filter inappropriate pictures or videos that the students attempt to upload, or that other users have uploaded on their Padlets. The Pro membership is quite expensive, and although it is something that you can cancel monthly if you no longer need it for your classroom, it leaves question for where the student work would ultimately go after cancelling your Pro membership and going back to using the Basic membership. Lastly, there were several times while working with the Padlet with Internet Explorer where the website would crash suddenly, and through various forums I found that many people were having similar issues when using Internet Explorer. This would be a concern especially if students did not have access to several Internet browsers, and could be very distracting and frustrating for the students.

The layout for Padlet is generally straightforward, which leads to a positive ease of use even after the first time using it. When creating your Padlet you are given the options to customize the display, posting abilities, collaboration features, add unique tags, and create your own URL address for the Padlet. All of these options drop down immediately when you first choose to create your Padlet, as well as the options for Privacy that you would like to select. I did not feel overwhelmed or confused while using Padlet, and I have had my 9th graders use it with ease after only 2 minutes or so playing around with it.

Being an avid user of Google Classroom, I felt as if Padlet was modeled in some ways after it, and I found it quite comfortable and easy to navigate. First of all, I thought the similarities to Google Classroom were done effectively and with purpose by the Padlet team. Countless features of the newest update of Google Classroom seemed to be the inspiration for features of Padlet. The drop down for the various ways that you can upload looked similar to Google Classroom, as well as the colorful and simple icons that are displayed with each upload option. Once you post on Padlet, it does look similar to responding to a “Question” in Google Classroom if the Teacher has elected for all of the Student Responses to be displayed. I think these similarities were in fact done with purpose, and can definitely attribute to the ease of use for educators and students who are able to navigate Google Classroom as second nature.

Similarity to Other Tools

Padlet is similar to Wakelet and iBrainstorm in that they are different online pinboards, however Wakelet seems less collaborative and more of a way to display and share multimedia information in an engaging way. Perhaps you can just work on the same board as the rest of your group members, however I am not sure how effectively it would work. iBrainstorm is an app that allows you to organize your notes on Apple devices, and there is an ability to work collaboratively and share with the class. This app does not have the same features for embedding content, but Padlet is similar in the aspect of providing space to brainstorm with multiple users. The last tool that comes to mind is Google Docs, because often times students will share Docs or Slides with one another in order to collaborate on a project. Padlet does allow for a more individualized outlet for this, instead of just the slideshow or document format that is provided by Google; however the overall concept is similar in terms of collective work.

Educators can use Padlet in countless different ways. First of all, Padlet can be used to introduce the students in the class in the beginning of the year, and it can be a great way for teachers to re-access this information throughout the year. Often times “About Me” handouts from the first day of school can be lost or just sit in a pile, but teachers can access their class Padlets on their phones or computers to help them get familiar with their countless students. Educators can also use Padlet to communicate with parents in an organized way, and they can update the class Padlet with what the class is doing every week. These can also be a great way to get parent collaboration on work, and will allow for students and parents to bring their own unique knowledge into the class. Padlet can also be used for Pre and Post Assessments, Word Walls, Exit Tickets, Peer Feedback, Digital Portfolios, Brainstorming, Do Nows, KWL charts, and many more. This platform allows for collaboration in an individualized way, and provides an outlet for visual and audio content that will help engage students and differentiate for their various learning styles.

Overall Rating of Padlet

Overall, I would rate Padlet a 3 out of 5. I think it can really be great for usage in the classroom, however the necessity to buy the Premium subscription to get more than three Padlets is a big disadvantage in my mind. The use of three Padlets does not allow for a teacher to complete a single project if for example they teach six separate sections of a class, without having to delete the previous Padlets and losing all of the work. If Padlet allowed for more Padlets, teachers would be able to effectively use previous Padlets completed by students as examples and models for the class. Otherwise, I think Padlet does provide many uses across various subjects, and it is extremely user friendly. There are many ways for students and educators to customize their Padlets, and users are able to embed content directly from more than 400 apps with ease. In my mind the price of this app did deduct points from the overall score, as well as the lack of monitoring the content on Padlet, besides the Profanity blocker. I think this could be an issue for many educators at various ages, and at the end of the day it is the educator’s job to protect the student. Padlet is a great collaboration tool, but I am hoping that another platform comes out with an equally effective tool free of cost to students and teachers.
