“Emilys Diary is an Multi-Genre/8-bit project...I do it for a number of reasons. First off, This was all for my ex girlfriend... Emily.. secondly I am constantly writing songs- way more than I could ever do with or without a band. That said, my only real opportunity to record and play many of the songs I write is to do them on my own. Thirdly, having a band that is very much focused on a specific genre is okay but I like to experiment with other genres of music. However, I write songs about other topics too. Some of those topics just don't seem to fit into my old bands category. So while my solo songs are sometimes mellow, soothing, acoustic, metalcore, etc.. you'll also find me writing about love, and friendships, and just about anything. I couldnt do this with my old band Dead-Like-Us, but when we started DLU It it was not our goal to play such songs... I'll update this some more so in the mean time...

Take good care of yourself, your friends, and your family.

-Peace, Love, Unity- Shun” – From the Facbook of Emily’s Diary.

The kawaii potato meme appeared back when the Japanese culture was kicking off in the UK, more and more people were watching Anime and devoting time and money into buying and creating cute things that fit in the culture. The Emily’s Diary series of drawings were done seemingly from 2013 to around 2015 on Facebook, though it seems he is more active on his Tumblr account, with recent 2016 drawings. The person behind these drawings, Shun, originally drew for his long term girlfriend, but also was trying to make a genre of music that sounded like 64 Bit gaming music from back when people had Nintendo 64’s and SEGAs, which seemingly lost focus when the drawings were involved, and many people relate to his drawings rather than the music he was trying to produce.

The drawings, while they were not the main focus of the whole “Emily’s Diary” in the first place, are really cute and “Kawaii” and depict two main humans which seem to be Shun and his girlfriend Emily, and a tiny pink potato as there sort of mascot for the many varied drawings he did. The potato is the primary focus, having been dressed up in little outfit or props and then adding ‘tato to the end of things to make it sound all cute and pretty. Also, Shun made many potato related drawings in regards to many anime, cartoons and also Disney films that were popular round the time he was constantly making drawings for his now ex-girlfriend Emily.

While I like the poster, I still think it was lacking in regards to white (Pink) space that it had. While I did not want to make it look busy, I was sure adding a few faded images was not going to take the overall focus out of the informational poster.

All the white and black was making it so the colours were not really coming out as much and focus was being drawn away from the writing.

With that in mind, I opted to fade out the small images of the llama and ghostie by about 50% so that they were part of the background instead. Also throughout the screenshots you can see that I added a glow effect around the potatoes to give them a lot more emphasis.

I also added my initials at the bottom.

Strengths:

I was glad to be able to do one of my favourite things currently for this project. I enjoyed doing the research for kawaii potatoes, and finding out more about the creator of the kawaii potato. My strengths are that I found research easily and I knew what I wanted to do for this project almost immediately.

Weaknesses:

I found that time was a huge constraint for me. I am not great at managing my time effectively to have work done on time, but I know I can get it done if I put the effort in. Another small weakness is that I did not really look into any other ideas I kinda focused on this one instead.

Next time:

I would like to spend time researching multiple ideas rather than concentrating on one just because it has a favourite thing in it, because even if I get excited by it, does not mean it can be truly effective for the brief.
