This showcase is an example of a Padlet. Padlet allows students to collaborate with their peers and organize their thoughts in a clean and thoughtful manner. A social studies teacher could use this tool in multiple ways. One way would be if the teacher is displaying a political cartoon from an era of study. Students would be able to share what they think the cartoonist is trying to say on the Padlet. Students could then reply back to one another with suggestions or praise for their analyses.

Google Sites provides an user-friendly way to share information with others by creating a website. The students could research a Civil War battle and instead of writing a traditional paper, they could use Google Sites as a way to present their research findings. It also allows for pictures and videos to be included.

This is a PowerPoint slideshow with a voiceover narration. Students can easily create a presentation on a given topic, say the Presidents of the United States. However, they can turn in a PowerPoint-converted-video instead of going up in front of the class and doing an oral presentation.

Scratch

I used a computer coding website called Scratch in conjunction with a Makey Makey, a tool that allows real world items to act as keystrokes. In this example, I connected Makey Makey to an old Globe I had and I used it as a review tool. Social Studies teachers could use this tool by having students create posters on the Allied Forces and Axis Forces in World War II. On the poster, the students would draw the nations; flags. Once they code it with Scratch, the student can record a voiceover detailing facts about the country's involvement in the conflict. So if they press the Flag of the Soviet Union, the Scratch website will start to play the student's voice as they explain the Soviet Union's role in the war.

Google Earth Voyager

Attached is a write up for Google Earth Voyager. Voyager is a feature in Google Earth that allows Students to take virtual "field trips" at historical sites. Voyager also contains quizzes and other educational materials. A social studies teacher could use this online tool as a way to preview a lesson. As I discovered, Google Earth had a lesson on the fall of the Soviet Union. The teacher could have the students follow along with the program prior to a class lecture on the subject. This way, the student will have background knowledge on the topic and be able to discuss it beyond the "who, what, when, etc.". It could also be used as a review tool as well.

Please ignore the error message that says "Google Earth is not supported". Once you click the link, it will work. Google Earth is a popular tool that shows 3-D modeling of cities and buildings. A social studies teacher could Google Earth as a visual tool for learners. For example, if a social studies teacher was teaching about Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon river, the teacher could pull up Google Earth and show the students the actual Rubicon river. This tool would offer better clarity to lessons which require a lot of discussions about Geography.

Edpuzzle is a website that allows teachers to insert questions into a video. In my example, I used the digital movie I created about the life of Abraham Lincoln as the material being covered. During certain parts of the video, it stops and ask questions to check the comprehension of the students and serves nicely as a formative feedback tool. This tool could be used in a social studies classroom by having the teacher uploading their lecture materials and then inserting questions from an upcoming exam. This is a great way to review before an exam.
